Heyyy

I have a friend who got a 5 in english language at GCSE and it unsure on whether or not to resit to try and get a 6 as they want to go into medicine.
Any advice on whether it is worth resitting would be helpful - thank you xx

Hello, I do think it is better for your friend to resit but it does depend on which university he/she goes to. As medicine is a competitive course, top-prestigious universities often look at predicted A-Level grades as well as their GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language. A grade 5 may be considered the entry requirement to some universities however it does not necessarily mean they will get a place offered. This is mainly because of competition. For example, if people take courses for A-LEVELS and achieved all A * as their predicted then they will consider this, your GCSE maths and English grade as well as your other grades and most importantly your personal statement. But if other people also came out with A* but got a higher grade in English Language and Maths and did well in their personal statement, chances are likely they will be given a place first. If there are spaces left, then your friend could get in but its likely vast number of people from all over the world will apply. Hence it might be worth it to retake and try aim for an A or A* instead of a 6 considering the competition.

Hope that helps !

Hiii
It would be safer to resit gcse english because most entry requirements for english is a 6 and so it would be better to try and increase the grade before uni applications next year. But however there are some unis that they do not accept gcse resits and also so ur friend won't be able to apply to these unis. But I'd still recommend re sitting english as there are handful of unis which do not care u resit english as long as u meet the entry requirements
