University of York contextual

I’m a parent of a young person who started the York black access course last year in yr12. When they started the grade reduction was published as 3 grade reduction but now it’s changed to say 2 on all the course information but still 3 on the black access page. This doesn’t seem fair especially as they’ve committed so many hours of engagement and travelled to York 3 times.
They qualify for standard contextual already because of our postcode so I’m struggling to see what the point of doing the course was. Can anyone with experience of this or similar at York give some clarification?

Hi there, thank you so much for getting in touch. The alternative offer for students completing the Black Access program is up to three grades below the standard offer in our prospectus. This means it could be reduced by three, two, or one grade.I hope this helps, but if you have any more questions or want to talk it through further, feel free to reach out to the Black Access team at [email protected] they’ll be happy to assist!

Best wishes,
Hazel 🙂

Thank you for responding Hazel. That’s not so easy to do anonymously.
Would a lower contextual offer be more likely for a person meeting multiple contextual data do you know?

Hello, I'm not certain of the answer to your question so I've contacted UG Admissions and Black Access. When I have their answers I'll let you know. I'd also like to reassure you about contacting about contacting UoY as all personal information will be treated confidentially and with respect, Admissions and Black Access are really lovely teams too 🙂

Hello, UG admissions have got back to me.

Firstly they've confirmed that anyone eligible for a contextual offer will receive one and they advise you check eligibility on our webpage.

Secondly, our WP participants do receive a further reduction on the contextual offer. All our WP offers are alternative offers. These offers state the standard typical or contextual (for those eligible) conditions then state a reduction to those grades when there has been successful completion on the WP courses.

The webpage can't give the full range of offers because they depend on the course applied for and whether the student is eligible for a standard or contextual offer as to what grade reduction they get through the programme.

I hope this helps but do get in contact with UG admissions at [email protected] if you need more clarification.

All the best, E.

Thank you for checking this for me Hazel. So as I’m understanding what admissions have told you, the ‘up to 3 grades’ comes from the contextual plus extra grade for widening participation equaling 3 grades? Otherwise that would be two grades for each as it says in the information which we would not be expecting.

Hi again,
There isn't a general rule that applies for all courses, but the maximum reduction that can be applied is three grades. This includes combining eligibility for a contextual offer plus taking part in one of our WP programmes.
Thanks 🙂
