Games Art study hours?

I want to apply to Staffs for Games Art but first I'd like to know how many hours are the students going to spend on campus, and how many are they expected to put in on their own? Preferably with all optional modules included.
I've looked all over the course website but I can't find this information. Maybe I'm just blind but please let me know!

Hello @lexyy515 !!

I'm Jodie, a third year games art student here at UoS, thought I could jump in and answer the questions you've brought up!

Having gone through almost the full three years of the course, I would say it's a healthy balance of both in person and self taught hours. When I first started, we were still running a 4 module per semester course having 2 semesters per year), which meant I had classes every single day in first year and (spoiler alert!) it was a LOT. Since then, we have switched down to 3 trimesters, and 2 modules for each one. This has helped balance the in person classes to self taught workflow massively as you have enough time to put in the hours for your course but also make sure you still get to have your downtime with friends or allow for other activities such as part time jobs etc

You usually average around about 2-3 in person classes per week, with each class ranging from 2-3 hours, and you're recommended to put in (and bare with me here it's been a while since they mentioned it ) 30 hours a week of your own independent learning on top of the course content. Obviously this can flex as you may have other commitments going on outside of uni - as long as you get the work done to your best possible standard that's what matters

The above applies to all the modules available, including the ones you select in 2nd and 3rd year

https://www.staffs.ac.uk/course/games-art-ba#contents - I've linked the course content for game art here and if you scroll down to where it says "modules" you can view all the compulsory ones and the optional ones too!

Hope this has cleared up you questions and if you need me to clarify or expand on anything don't hesitate to reach out I would love to help

All the best!

Thank you so much this is exactly what I wanted to know! The new structure sounds good, so I'm definitely looking forward to Staffs (if I get accepted)
