The Student Room Group

Anyone else have odd flatmates?

My flatmates play loud music during the day (anytime between 1pm and 6pm) which can be heard through the flat. They talk loudly during the night 11pm-3am. They don't clean their dishes after using them and just leave their things in the sink or on the counter. They don't clean the shower or sink after shaving. They display empty cans and bottles of alcohol on the kitchen shelves. I would have thought things like cleaning up after yourself and whispering at night and not being as loud as humanly possible is basic human decency?

They made a chart with things like vomiting, sex heard, hospital visits etc. and displayed it on the kitchen door. They have also added my name, which I just find super disrespectful to assume someone else would do that (especially when we don't know each other that well). I found it weird they would display that especially in a place meant for eating and an open place where cleaners, maintenance, parents etc can see and it's just embarrassing. I wouldn't have much of a problem if they didn't hang it up or kept it in someone elses room.

It really makes me uncomfortable that they shamelessly act like this and I don't want to be disliked by them or seem like I'm mothering them only because I want a flat which isn't filthy and where I can sleep or study in peace.

I've never regarded myself as a clean person as my room at home is usually messy but doing all this especially while living with other people is insane to me. I have no idea if it is common to act like this or I just got unlucky with my flatmates.

Tbh, this is fairly standard behaviour for students!

I’ve had one dangerously dumb housemate though once! Albeit from the UAE (this was a few years ago) but still, he asked the following questions;

1. How do you dry your clothes when it’s raining outside? (We didn’t have a drier)
2. How do you cook pasta?
3. How do you cook eggs?

I think he tried to cook something in the microwave at one point (likely something with metal) as our microwave was completely destroyed once…

Played his guitar at 3am when everyone in the house was on placement except him (we were all teachers or paramedics).

I wouldn’t take anything they do too seriously personally. I did my MSc this year and each week we had a new (Cu)nt of the Week, randos sleeping in the sofa, one of them bringing back scabbies (I’m not joking, literal scabbies) once every couple of months (as far as I’m aware, he got it at least 5 times in the year and passed it on to all the housemates, minus myself luckily - I suspect it’s because I refused to sit on the grotty sofa!).

So in all honesty, nothing should surprise you at uni!

EDIT:
Random typos!

For real, it's so uncomfortable especially for someone with mental health issues, like this has pushed me over the edge and worsened by anger issues and made me feel like such a filthy person for just living among these people. I have no idea how they're not embarrassed to be acting like this. It's insane to me how so many people lack social awareness or human decency, it's beyond me how they find a way to get into University.
