Camera for photography degree?

I am considering doing a photography degree. (September 2025).

I am building up a portfolio but want to invest in a refurbished camera that would be suitable for this kind of degree.

What models would people suggest?

Hi @Hanpad16!

Most universities, us included, have lots of different camera brands and types that you can sign out to borrow. I know we don't charge the students and I assume other Unis do it the same way.

I think you should hang on before buying, and try out the cameras your Uni has on offer before you buy anything. Lots of photographers develop personal preferences for cameras once they've used a variety. Maybe put the money aside until you've tried a few at Uni. Then you could make sure you buy a body that matches the fancy lenses your Uni is able to lend you.

I know that's not really what you were asking, but I hope its helpful.

Hi there!

I hope you're well. Have you tried getting in contact with the course leader of the uni you are hoping to attend? I did this when looking to buy a laptop for Graphic Design. This was really helpful, as I was given a list of top recommendations that covered any budget. This reassured me that I would have good enough equipment for starting my degree.

Alternatively, a lot of uni offer to hire out equipment, meaning you can borrow things as and when you need.

Hope this helps a little.

For a photography degree, a good camera would be a DSLR or mirrorless model with manual control. Some solid options are:

1.

Canon EOS Rebel (DSLR)

2.

Nikon D3500 (DSLR)

3.

Sony Alpha A6000 (Mirrorless)

4.

Fujifilm X-T series (Mirrorless)

Focus on a camera that suits your style and budget!
