tara's gyg 💌 - year 11 2024-2025 🎀

im a year 11 aiming for grade 9s and its so fustrating since no matter how much effort i put into revising, i end up getting around 70%-80% :frown: its always so consistent and i barely improve!! any tips??

here are my year 10 mocks
business edexcel - 5 ( top 5 of class btw, we're so behind because our teacher left and we just had supply teacher for the whole of year 10 )
english lang aqa - 7 ( average of all the assessments ive done since start of year 10, honestly hate lang i cant deal with the time pressure and annotating on the spot )
english lit aqa - 7 (again, average of all assessments ive done since start of year 10, i prefer lit over lang but i always write too much 😭 + the time pressure!!)
further maths aqa - 5 ( for context, we started furthermaths in the middle of year 10 and have lessons in our lunch times (30 mins) once a fortnight )
maths edexcel higher- 6 (my actual paper was an 8, but the grades were capped at 7)
rs aqa - 7 ( struggle with timing )
biology aqa higher triple- 8
physics aqa higher triple- 8
chemistry aqa higher triple - 7 ( one of my highest sciences, but the grade boundaries were extremely high since someone found the paper )
spanish aqa higher- 7

predicted based on these mocks
business - 6
english lang and lit - 8
furthermaths - 6 (lets not talk about this)
maths - 9
rs - 8
bio - 8
chem - 7
physics - 8
spanish - 7

not a very productive day tbh, the previous week was full of assessments (not mocks- thank god) so im using this week to catch up and rest after those hectic weeks of revision😋
i have a spanish reading tomorrow and i feel so unprepared !! 😣 i need to lock in for spanish lowk... i just did some vocab and did a few questions. i barely had any time for anything else since i had piano and my afterschool journalling club and i had to do two weeks worth of maths homework 😓
anyway hopefully ill have a more productive day tmrw + im starting law club !! i thought i'd attend to see if there would be any cross overs with medical ethics/ forensic science and just for my love for debate and criminology! <3
hii just found this blog and i'm looking forward to following your progress!! what are the main revision methods you're using atm?

hii!! honestly its different for each subject, but im trying to focus on learning content ive forgotten/ havent got the hang of yet:

for science, i do the cognito questions for each topic, and whatever subtopic i dont understand/remember, i watch Freesciencelessons videos on, and the i blurt out everything on my whiteboard or a piece of paper. if ive forgotten any points, i relearn them through flashcards on anki, quizlet, pmt or the cgp ones i purchased. i also have the spec up just incase. after i understand the concept, i do exam qs eg on save my exams or pmt. afterwards, i just try to do active recall through those flashcards previously mentioned.

for maths and furthermaths, i usually just do exam questions from mathsgenie, the spec website, dr frost maths etc. and i ask my tutor or teacher if i dont understand a topic (my form tutor is my maths teacher so i just ask her in form time) if im really struggling i watch 1stclassmaths or mathsgenie videos and attempt questions

for english lit, im planning on starting to make mindmaps for each character and linking it to themes. a lot of people do it the otherway, but im going to see what works for me!! im also going to try and do one or two essay(s) a week under timed conditions since i struggle with timing and giving it to my teacher to mark.

for english lang, i honestly dont know how to revise other than practice annotating random extracts and writing under timed conditions ... but im trying to do more from now on!!

for spanish, i do duolingo everyday, go on memrise and do vocab on anki/quizlet. i plan on doing more things with tenses and reading + listening since those are what i struggle with most. im also going to perfect all of my spanish responses for speaking in the half term.

for rs, im going to do mindmaps on different topics and just do practice questions under timed conditions (again, i struggle with time a lot) and give it to my teacher to mark

for business, i need to relearn content so i plan on using bbc bitesize and save my exams as theyre both extensively detailed. and again, since its an essay subject, im going to do questions and give them to my teacher to mark.

you can definitely see a pattern here but im trying to find what works best for me!!

It already looks like you're putting in a lot of effort, great job!! For science i would highly recommend Science with Hazel on YouTube, she helped me get up to a 9 in all 3 sciences! I also think sometimes making flashcards with exam questions you've previously gotten wrong can be helpful as it helps you better understand the key words the mark scheme is looking for! For maths, just keep doing what you're doing and try to get in a little practise every day - consistency is key with maths! For english, definitely have a look at exemplar essays if your exam board has any available. For english lit specifically this bumped me up 3 grades because I used the analysis of the quotations in the exemplar essays in my exam - yes, the question won't be the same but the analysis still holds if you can tweak it slightly to fit the question. For Spanish speaking make sure you try and practise a little with a friend whenever it can - it'll help you both since you can pick up good phrases from each other! Generally just make sure you try and get through as many exam questions as possible so you can better understand the mark scheme. Good luck with your revision!!

thank you soso much!! ill definitely integrate these recommendations into my revision. and yes i do make flashcards with exam questions, or i go over the green pen corrections i did on my exam paper based on the markscheme. ive recently started doing the 5 a day maths questions from corrbet maths as well. i think im quite alright with annotations - its the actual writing of the essay i struggle with, but ill also have a look at exemplar essays!! do let me know if you have any recommended for aqa ( i do a christmas carol, an inspector calls, love and relationships, and macbeth ) and yess i love randomly speaking in spanish with my friends (ofcourse its quite broken but its proven to be useful ) thank you again for the advice + recommendations !! <33

just got my tests back - and im very shocked to say the least...

physics was absolute hell - lowest ive ever gotten... although most of the class got around the same so that says alot about my teacher, but tbh im the one to blame so im definitely going to focus on physics. the markscheme was so specific on the wording + my teacher picked the hardest questions!! (she even admitted herself...)

re was also disgusting - i revised alot for it aswell, after neglecting it for the most of year9 +10. the practice papers i gave my teacher were grade 9s and i went down by so much in the actual exam because of timing ☹️ - horrible!

english - very annoyed about how i didnt manage to write a conclusion for AIC essay bc of timing, however i got 26/34 which was 7a as a grade!! my teacher said if i had written a conclusion, i wouldve definitely achieved higher 😁

chemistry - got only one of our papers back but im happy with my mark !! 38/45 - 84%

spanish reading today was horrid!! i need to do more practice on that... although law club (or should i say japanese knotweed club) was great! deffo looking forward to it again <3

anyway heres what i did today:

english MRI - fixed some things on my essay + hopefully i can show it to my teacher tomorrow
maths: 5 a day + proving circle theorems
business: went over sales process (2.3.4)
chem polymerisation cgp flashcards

sometimes teachers can mark more harshly for mocks, so don't feel too down! your english mark is so impressive given you didn't have time for a conclusion!! chemistry seems to be shaping up well for you too!
