Do I have the right a levels to study fashion at university?

I’m in year 12 right now and am interested in studying fashion marketing or communication at university. The a levels I picked are film, history and BTEC media. At the time of picking I was thinking of going into film but now I’m not so sure as I also would really like to go into fashion but am worried I no longer have the subjects any universities would want. What should I do?

Hi There,

At Liverpool Hope we don't require any specific subjects for our course in contemporary fashion design and creative industries business management just a portfolio is required😁

Hiya there Mai,

Great to hear you're looking into pursuing fashion, what a fun and varied course!

Unfortunately Bath is highly specialist in Engineering & Design, Management, Science and Social Sciece and so I cannot speak from personal experience. However, I think the best thing you can do is to call up the admissions teams of any unis you're interested in and ask them whether they would accept your subjects.

As a random example that ranks quite highly on the the complete university guide, Leeds' BA Fashion Marketing ask for an art/design subject or media and so you will likely be fine with Media and Film; and Kingston's Fashion promotion & Comms ask for a set number of UCAS points only and a portfolio. However the admissions teams are the best people to answer your question - so once you've got a shortlist of specific courses at different unis you like the sound of, consider giving them a call 🙂

I hope this helps and very best of luck with your goal!

Hi @mai9

Like Holly from the University of Bath said UCAS points and a portfolio is all we require here at Kingston. I currently study fashion promotion and communication here at Kingston so I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the course

The subjects you study are actually really relevant to the course. I am sure from media you will have some great work to put in a portfolio and film is such a big part of the fashion industry.

If I was you I would still apply! Start thinking about what you would put in a portfolio and if you think you need more work then you could do self-led projects in your spare time using things like photography, styling, graphic design, collage or even written work and research you have done could be relevant.

If you can going to open days also helps you find out what the lecturers are looking for in a portfolio, as well as looking on the websites.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi @mai9

We have a Fashion, Media and Marketing BA (Hons) course. You can find the details here https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-fashion-media-marketing

UCAS points, and a creative portfolio are what count for any arts related courses, but it doesn't have to be perfect. You're coming to Uni to learn how to create a professional looking portfolio, so anything you've created from your A-levels or at home can count. The film and media A-levels will be pretty good for Fashion Media & Marketing, and things like mood boards too.

We have a page for portfolio advice https://www.aup.ac.uk/posts/top-tips-on-building-a-creative-portfolio Ignore the Date. That was for last year.

Feel free to get in touch if you want to talk to some one about it in more detail.

Thanks

Hi @mai9,

This is great to hear! I studied the Fashion Promotion and Marketing course at the University of Central Lancashire, which I highly recommend. Most courses require a portfolio which is something you could start putting together or working towards as most likely will be needed during application/interview process.

I was in a class with people who studied fashion prior to university or didn't. I didn't study a fashion course as much. I did an art and design diploma and art foundation where I focused on photography. But having a portfolio showcasing that you are interested within fashion communication, is definitely enough to get you onto a university course with good grades within your chosen a-levels. Don't forget university is there for you to develop and learn further. Which on my course, I was able to get great transferable skills.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to message! 🙂
