What evidence is needed for show I’m self supporting?

Hi,
I moved out just over 2 years ago now, and have just started a foundation year course. Next year I will be on a standard undergraduate course and understand that I will also then be eligible to classify as independent.
What evidence is needed to prove that I have been self supporting? I am somewhat limited because all bills were in my boyfriend’s name. I do have payslips for the last 2 years however and will continue to have pay slips for out of term time work by the time I reapply.
I am also unsure where I stand because I had to put my mum’s address down on my application as my boyfriend moved back in with his parents when I started my course, but she doesn’t support me in any way, I just had to put an address down. Am I technically homeless? I am not on any tenancy or registered at any household currently.
No idea where I stand on this please help!!

Hi there,

If you're trying to claim you have self supported for 3 years before the start of your course, we need proof of this. This would be P60's for the last 3 years or payslips to cover this period. If you claim benefits you would also include benefits letters to show what you received during this time. If you used savings we would need bank statements to show savings you had and used.

Thanks,
Claire

Hello, that’s fine I can evidence that. What kind of income am I expected to have earned to have been able to support myself please? I have read that it is decided based on my level of income during that period.
Hi there. A student can be considered independent if they supported themselves financially for at least three years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course.

The three years can include periods when you were;

in paid employment

in receipt of state benefits such as: Income Support, JSA, incapacity benefits, invalidity pension or maternity allowance, PIP or DLA. (this is not a exhaustive list)

If you were provided food and accommodation in place of an income this can also be considered as self-support, but an employer letter will be required confirming the details of employment and what was included.

Thanks, Leah.

Thanks Leah, I understand that but am wanting clarification on how it is judged beyond that. Is there a set amount of income they look for? I am certain my income was enough (because I lived off it so it has to be) but just wanted clarification. Thank you.
Whilst there is no threshold for self-support it is expected that the amount of income you have received is sufficient for you to have supported yourself financially and be able to pay rent, bills etc.

If you had a low income but were able to support yourself, you should provide evidence of how this was done along with a breakdown of income and expenditure. This will then be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Thanks, Leah.
