Paramedic Science without a science subject A Level

So I'll be a mature student (25 at the start of the course) and have GCSE equivalents that might not count since they were acquired abroad, and A Level equivalents that do count but don't include any science subject

I've worked in healthcare (A&E healthcare assistant) the past three years as Band 3. I'm pretty settled on becoming a paramedic and returning to uni to do it. Some unis say they will look at experience on case by case basis but I'm not sure if they will look at my lack of science subject and decide this is a deal breaker - the unis I've written to querying this were vague, give me non-answers and going one by one is becoming a bit tedious given the lack of results.

My question is, would my work experience be enough to compensate for lack of science subject in my quals and which unis might actually consider it (UWE did answer they would as they have loads of mature students in similar situation), and if there are unis that don't need a science subject in the requirements (I think Edge Hill doesn't - I'll be going to their open days to see for myself but a backup would be nice)

TIA

Hey, :wavey:

There are many options into getting into university without having specific entry requirements.

1.

As you have mentioned you will be going to some open days. This is great as you can chat to the academics to find out more about their entry requirements and your work experience. I would also chat to the admissions department if they are at the open days as they can help you and they can have a look at your qualifications you have gained abroad.

2.

Work experience is really important and the experience you already have is great. It totally depends on the university whether they accept you without specific entry requirements. However, ensure in your personal statement and future interviews that you highlight your work experience and what this has taught you.

3.

If you do not have the correct entry requirements for university you can have a look into doing a access course at a college. Many colleges now offer this and it is a way into university and you gain a qualification.

4.

Many universities offer a foundation year. A foundation year is a year at university before you start your degree. Therefore, it makes your degree typically 4 years long. A Foundation Year provides a great induction to studying at university and to a subject you want to explore, offers you a highly supportive environment where you can develop the self-confidence, knowledge, skills and understanding your further study and takes your individual circumstances into account such as grades etc.

I hope this helps, good luck

Hi @Charlie_sth,

It is great to hear you are looking to return to education to train to be a paramedic. No specific subjects are required as part of the entry criteria for our BSc (Hons) Paramedic Practice course. Therefore, we can consider people who haven't studied science at level 3.

I hope this helps
