Architecture at the University of York [UPDATE]

Hi guys,

So University of York is starting their new Architecture course for 2025/2026 entry (my year of entry) and I'm unsure whether to apply. Considering it's a new course it perhaps wouldn't be a good idea, since I would be a guinea pig of sorts, and there would be no upper years to ask for help/advice from (although asking for help in Architecture is generally hard anyways). However, York is a Russell group so I wouldn't really expect the teaching/course quality to be terrible right off the bat. Additionally, they do have pictures of the exterior of their new school of Architecture, which looks pretty big and is definitely the biggest school of Architecture out of my other choices (other than Sheffield), and I assume that they have relatively large studio spaces as well as (obviously) new model-making machines.

Has anyone else considered York for Architecture? Have you put it down as one of your choices?

UPDATE 10/12/24:

Hey guys so I ended up not applying to York. I had applied to Oxford Brookes Uni initially but decided to substitute it for a different choice after I had submitted my UCAS application. I had been debating on whether to substitute it for York or Manchester but ultimately decided to apply for Bath to make use of my guaranteed contextual offer that I got from the pathway program. I have now since received 4/5 offers so far and am currently waiting for a response from Sheffield!

The response from the Uni of York itself was extremely reassuring! I am greatly considering going to York for my architecture masters! Also, good luck to everyone who applied and secured interviews, let me know how it went!

New courses can take a while to find their feet. You might find that the number of department staff only grows as a new cohort enters each year, and facilities expand in line with the number of students. This was the case at Lancaster, which was a new course in 2020. It received RIBA validation earlier this year. Ask York what the size of the first-year cohort will be (it might be very small), where the new department is located and look into the background of the head of department and staff that are on board so far.

Also, where did you get your information about the size of the department and the studio spaces? I can't see any pics on the uni website. Try to visit or ask questions about the location, studio size, workshops, etc.

Hi there,

It's great to hear that you're considering Architecture at York. I can totally understand your hesitation with it being a new course. But the course will be working towards full Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) accreditation by the time you graduate. Our staff have worked as architects and have great connections in the industry, including York Central - a sustainable development project the city. This will mean you'll get experience working on real architectural projects during your time here.

You'll also get mentoring time with a local architect, and there will be plenty of opportunities to network as you study. Our Head of School Lorraine has set up architectural courses at other universities, and is keen to show how York's heritage can blend with fresh architectural ideas.

If you're considering applying, I would recommend that you email the BA Architecture Course Lead, Dr Ehab Kamel. I'm sure Ehab will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the course and what it's like to study at York.

Have a look at the York School of Architecture pages for more general info on our teaching and research.

I hope that is helpful. J

Thank you! I got another email a few weeks after my initial interview invite telling me about the day, maybe you haven't received that yet.
