Graduate entry Dentistry

So I've been following @applesandalevels journey to grad entry Dentistry and loved the idea of keeping a journal to broadcast my thoughts and speak out loud about my journey to Dentistry. @applesandalevels if you see this, thanks for the inspo!!

So very recently made the switch from med to dent after much deliberation. This will be my first time applying with the intent to study Dentistry. I have previously had 2 previous attempts to study Medicine - one during A levels and the after following my undergrad. I've now sat the UCAT a total of 3 times and hoping that I get an offer to study for 2025 entry!!

My stats are predicted 1st BSc in Biomedical science. I previously attained a 2.2 and this was down to not completing four components of my final year modules (ECs) however prior to this I was on track to attain atleast a 2.1. I went on to study an MSc in Physician Associate studies and now I am repeating the final year of my degree.

I originally applied to 3 dent and 2 med considering there are only 3 grad entry dent courses in the UK and OMFS route has been growing on me so thought if I get into med I would more likely explore that option. However at the last minute managed to substitute one of the grad entry med courses for a standard entry Dent course.

Applied to the following with acknowledgement emails dates and times listed:
* Aberdeen (4 yr) I 23/10/24 16:30
* Dundee (5 yr) I 21/10/24 17:41
* King's College London (4 yr) I 16/10/24 07:14
* UCLan (4 yr) I 17/10/24 08:12
* Surrey GEM I 16/10/24 10:22

Hoping for the best !

Hey so are you currently in your final year of the Msc PA course?
I also recently finished my undergraduate degree in PA studies which took me 4 years and i am unsure if i should pursue GEM. Currently there are barely any PA jobs atm and the who controversy about the PA role has started to worry me. Idk if the PA course will get any better after regulation but i have a strong interest to study medicine. I have also been watching some content creators who are doctors who have also mentioned not to pursue medicine if you are from a low income household as there is so many hidden cost that comes along with it.
Any suggestions or advice will be great.

Hey there!

So I completed my PA degree in December last year but have yet to work a PA job. There has been much change in the last year and it is still uncertain what the future of the profession holds, even following regulation.

As a PA you would defo be prepared and be able to catch onto things during GEM as there are a lot of concepts th at PAs are trained to attain. I.e., history taking, examination, clinical skills etc. I think I’ve been in a similar place to you and I’d honestly say if you’ve wanted to do med and done your research then go for it. I myself was in the position after completing my biomed degree and not getting into med and I remember speaking with a PA at the time and she said to me “if medicine is what you’ve always wanted to do then go for it”, she told me not to settle for PA just because I didn’t get into med but ultimately chose PA because the work/life balance didn’t appeal to me on further consideration and didn’t fit into the ethos or values I’d like to uphold once I have a family
of my own.

I am aware that medicine can be taxing but first I am hearing of advice against those from low income households. This is where your research will come in handy. As with all other health courses, attendance to placement is mandatory but sometimes the locations you have to travel to are out of your way and can become costly. Stethoscopes are a one-off payment of about £100 but you could see it as an investment. Long story short, yes it can be taxing but if you are interested in it to the extent you believe it is worth the sacrifice then I would recommend looking into any hardship funds your unis of choice have. Most universities will have them on standby and you could also seek out any further financial funding from the university.

I hope that was somewhat helpful!

I know feels like forever I keep logging on incase I missed an email but nothing! I applied to KCL 4 and 5 year, Aberdeen and Sheffield but only Sheffield because I panic applied to a fourth and didn't realise they had a cut off. I remember reading the thread for last year do you remember how long it took anyone to hear from the others?
