The Student Room Group

On glasses and being in uni...

I've had an NHS voucher that covers all of my glasses costs since I was 9, and I know it expires when I turn 19. I'm currently 18 and in my first year of university and booking an appointment for when I'm home for enrichment week. Would I still be able to get my glasses costs covered because I'm still in fulltime education, or would I have to pay full price? I've tried googling it but specsavers is confusing as ever with their definitions.

Thanks for the help pookies <3
So it’s a bit of a grey area… in theory no they shouldn’t be covered because you aren’t in mandatory compulsory education however in reality I’ve heard mixed things about whether people get them covered or not

I've seen kind of the same reasoning in posts similar to mine, so I'm kinda going off the assumption it's a hit or miss thing. I'll probably book the appointment anyway because,, I am,, struggling with my current glasses - so I'm just gonna hope that specsavers shows mercy on me, otherwise I'll just use the student discount they offer and bite into my overdraft lolol

You should look into the NHS Low Income Scheme, which can provide help with the cost of eye tests and glasses. They aim to issue the certificate within 4 weeks of applying (assume you qualify for one).

You don't need to get your glasses from the same optician that does the eye test. Make sure you ask for a copy of your prescription once you've been tested, as you can then take that to any optician to have glasses made.

The money isn't really a problem since my work hours more than cover the costs, it's really just more of a convenience thing for me so I'm not caught off-guard. I only really had the vouchers because my vision is extra, extra bad, anyway. Thank you for the advice, though! Some of my friends are kinda in the same situation I'm in, so I'll pass this off to them )
