How many marks out of 16 would this question be?

(d) How far do you agree with Interpretation 2 about the extent of support for the Nazi regime in the
years 1933-39?
Explain your answer, using both interpretations and your own knowledge of the historical context. (16)
I do not agree with the approach taken by interpretation 2 . The words in the title of interpretation “coercion” convey that the German citizens were forced to support Hitler. To a certain extent I agree that the German citizens wanted to support Hitler because the word “consent” conveys that they wanted to support Hitler because consent means permission to do something so it means that the German citizens had permission to support Hitler. This juxtaposition shows that the writer does not know whether they were forced to or not because of the language they used. So therefore I think that I do not agree with the approach taken by interpretation 2 because they were forced to support Hitler.

I do think that the events that interpretation 1 covers are much more valid in the support for the Nazi regime. The words “did not conform” convey that they don’t want to support Hitler because they are not following the rules of the Nazis. To a certain extent I disagree with this because they might not follow the rules because they are not fair and it discriminates against people.

Furthermore I agree with interpretation 2 because in 1929, 4 years before Hitler had power over Germany there was the Great Depression that affected Germany and many people lost their jobs. This meant that Hitler gained supporters because the Great Depression was because Stresemann got loans from America and they wanted them paid back so they supported Hitler because they thought that Hitler would fix all these problems in Germany.
