Dracula

I’m thinking of reading classics, I’ve heard mixed reviews about this book, it’s been on my list for a while, how is it and should I read it?

Some people dislike the diary entry and letter format of the book, but it is an enduring favourite of mine, personally. My biggest complaint is that Stoker thinks he is Tolstoy with some of his rambling character and location descriptions, but he lacks the same sort of penetrating insight and nuanced social awareness so doesn't quite pull it off. Dracula is still a very good, engaging, and fun book to read.

Le Fanu also has a vampire story. And there is a book that was MORE POPULAR than Dracula when published and which is almost never mentioned any more: The Beetle, by Richard Marsh

I enjoyed it & I'd say it was worth reading. There's another vampire novel published in the same year as Dracula which I'd recommend as well- Blood of the Vampire by Florence Marryat. Some of the language in this one is definitely of it's time & may be uncomfortable for modern audiences but it's a bit of a different take on the vampire myth & an author who deserves more recognition IMO.

You really seem to ask about Bram Stoker's original in 1897. Just to make sure I got you right. There are so many books about dracula and vampires since his publication.
