Uni awarded home fees / SFE denied student loans

My father was awarded a contract to set up a new business overseas.

We planned to return to the UK in time for me to start A-Levels and then take a year out working - as i am quite young for my age year.

Due to covid we were unable to return and with no specific plan in place for schools re-opening in the UK / border relaxation, i was enrolled in a 2 year IB course overseas - and then took a year out to work back in the UK.

However despite my father providing comprehensive details including salary, letters from employer, full details of travel with flight receipts showing me spending most of my holidays in the UK (except for Covid period), student finance was declined on the basis of him not owning a property in the UK.

He had rented property for the whole of my life prior to taking the job - so it's impossible for him to provide such information.

My university however - prior to my student loan application - gave me home student status based on all of the same information.

It's a very strange and concerning experience considering i have started study and have bills due.

it genuinely feels like i've been talking to a robot - unlike when i discussed the situation with my University.

Having done plenty of research on this, I'd be very interested to see which case law has been applied to my situation.

Hi Elgen. Just to clarify, have you been awarded Tuition Fees already? Was this the Maintenance Loan application that was denied? What route were you trying to apply under for this? Thanks, David

no - i made application for both tuition and maintenance online but was denied on both.
all the universities that made me offers did so on 'home fee' status due to my circumstances.

Hi Elgen,

Thanks for explaining. When you were initially declined were you told you could provide more evidence or information? Or were you told there was nothing more we could do?

Thanks, Graeme

As requested, i replied with itemised details of all of my regular trips back to the UK - flight receipts, why i went back, who i stayed with etc etc.
Also a letter from my fathers employer at the time detailing the contract and length as well as income.
Also information about my schooling prior to leaving the UK
All of the same requested info i provided to the various universities in regards to attaining 'home status'

Hi Elgen,

When you were living abroad with your family did you move permanently or was it temporary? Are you a UK national?

Thanks, Drew

temporary. sent letter from dads employer saying so. got delayed coming back due to covid as mentioned before. Hence university agreed on home fee basis
