I need to leave Uni but can’t afford my accommodation

I’m desperately struggling with my mental health and staying at uni will damage this further i fear. However my accommodation contract states i am liable for the full year even if i leave, if i can find someone to take over my tenancy then I’ll be let off but this is extremely hard. Surely there’s a way i can get out as i feel completely hopeless. The stresses of this is further deteriorating my mental health and I can’t see a way out.

Hi there!

First of all, I'm really sorry to hear you're struggling. I too really struggled with my first year of university. Before you withdraw, I urge you to speak to your academic tutor, wellbeing team, and disability team, and tell them how you're feeling. They may be able to grant a temporary mental health leave for you until you're doing better, rather than you withdrawing, they may be able to put in place accommodations on your course that can help you, and provide/refer you to specialist support. Together you'll be able to create a plan that works best for you, whether that means withdrawing or not.

On the accommodation side of things, reach out to your university's accommodation team. Your university should have a designated contact for accommodation related issues, who will be able to help. I'd try searching the internet for your university's name, followed by "accommodation team". If you want to share your university's name, I can help you to find the links for all of the services I've mentioned (via message or here), if not that's okay too. If you want to find someone to take over the tenancy yourself, try searching for Fresher's pages on Facebook, as there'll probably be someone looking for accommodation. But again, I urge you to reach out for help first, before making any decisions.

I hope this helps a little? If you need anything else, or want help finding your university's wellbeing/disability/accommodation teams, let me know. I hope you feel better soon🤍
