written work cambridge

hi!! the required written works to be submitted need to be "in an essay format", at least in my case, but does essay format strictly mean an essay or could you include a poetry commentary since it has the same format?

If it's English or MML, I'd suggest this would be OK unless they specify anything further about the written work that suggests it isn't – you will also be asked to write commentaries certainly in MML and presumably also in English, so it would be relevant to the course!
