alevel subjects

I'm a gcse student applying for college, I want to do medicine at a russel group uni, I have picked bio and chem so far but I'm stuck between choosing psychology and maths?
I like maths and people tell Maths is more favourable for medicine but I think I'll get a better grade in psychology. I don't know which is best or whether my 3rd subject really matters

Have you looked at the subject requirements for universities you might be interested in applying to?
In my experience, a lot of universities require Maths for STEM degrees, so I would take a look.
If they don't have any specific requirements, go for the subject that you know you will enjoy more and get better grades in.

For medicine, a russel group uni doesn't really mean anything, so I would recommend choosing unis that would be the most strategic for you. As for maths or psychology - pick psychology. If you think you'll get a better grade and enjoy it more, it's a better pick. The only medicine course that wants 3 science alevels is Cambridge (psych isn't included here). An A grade in psych will open more medical schools to you than a B grade in maths (not saying you would get those grades - I'm sure you can do great in both).

Going to an RG Uni fir Med is totally meaningless. There is no 'better' Uni for Medicine, and no 'better course' - all Medicine courses are accredited by the GMC as 'equal'. No-one will care where you qualified as a doctor - not the NHS or your future patients. All they will care about is that you are a qualified doctor, and actually that's all you should care about as well.

yes! I have taken a look at the entry requirements, most don't bother about 3rd subject but some want the 3rd one to be another science or psychology. I think after looking at them now I may pick the one I would enjoy more, thank you!

thank you so much!! I was happy to hear that and I'm glad that it depends on your grade and not the subject, I think I'm leaning more towards psych now 😁

I agree, a russel group uni is very close to me and this also relates to what I was wondering if it would make a difference if I applied to either. thank you!

Biology and chemistry are 2 of the main ones. Double check the course on a few unis websites to see if they specify maths or not.
If they specify maths, then id do maths. But if they dont specify maths, then id do psychology if you think that you will get a better grade in it.

Hi!

Any third A-Level is fine, as long as you have A-Level Biology & Chemistry. Leading top medicine unis, such as Imperial, UCL, Oxford, Bristol, St Andrews, Manchester, Birmingham, Kings College London & Uni of Edinburgh all say that the third A-Level choice has no impact on the application (assuming A/A* in that subject)
The only medical school that may want Maths/Physics as a third is Cambridge, but really, there are at least 35 medical unis out there to choose from, if you had Bio, Chem and ANY THIRD A-LEVEL (the third has to be an 'A-LEVEL', so no CTECS/BTECS/APPLIED/LEVEL 2/1...etc)

Hope this helps

If you’re good at math then math for sure but like if ur going to get a terrible grade at math probably psych
If you can get a good grade in maths I would probably choose this as it will suit a medicine application better I think but if you aren't confident in maths then go for psychology because it is better to get a higher grade in a slightly less relevant subject
Good luck xx
