Transferring after foundation year

Hi, I'm currently doing a foundation year in English but I'm not enjoying the course and I can't imagine myself studying it for 3 more years even though the course changes a bit in the first year of the degree I have read about it and I know I won't enjoy the modules and the course as a whole.

I have told the university that I want to transfer to the University Of Sheffield after completing my foundation year I told them that If I were to get rejected I would transfer courses at my current university but after doing a lot of research and looking through the courses I didn't find any options so I decided to just remain at my current course If I were to get rejected.

I have already started my UCAS application because I contacted the University Of Sheffield and they said I could give it a try. But will my foundation year really change anything? The entry requirements are pretty high and my A level grades are really bad I have achieved CDE and I've failed my maths gcse.
Please don't tell me to resit not only is it too late(I'm 20 yrs old) but It will completely destroy me. I'm just completely lost I don't know what to do if I were to get rejected.
Also I won't lose my place at my current university because I have an unconditional offer.
I really wanted to do a joint degree English with law or psychology or creative writing but it's too late and I've already given up on the idea.

Hi,

I am a MA student in Language & Education and graduated earlier this year with a BA in English Language & Linguistics. As far as I am aware The University of Sheffield has entry requirements which apply to all students. I therefore believe you would still need to get the entry requirements to receive an offer, regardless of having a foundation year. I am aware of the uni accepting some students who do not receive the entry requirements, so it may still be worth a try, but I can not guarantee the outcome.

What university are you at now if you don't mind me asking and what do you not like about the course? I would advise you think carefully about the areas you do not like in your course, as you do not want to be stuck in the same situation further down the line. I would hate for you to feel unhappy with your choice to continue studying English in a few years time.

Let me know if this helped at all, or if I can help you further 💗

Hello, thank you for your response I really appreciate it. I'm aware of the entry requirements but I thought I'd give it a try regardless and If I get rejected I will try entering clearing with the uni of Sheffield. If that doesn't work out too I will just stay at my current uni even If I don't enjoy the course.
What I don't like about the course is the topics and the modules there's just not much variety which is one of the main reasons I find the course at the University of Sheffield to be more appealing.
I know it might be just a case of the foundation year being unenjoyable and the actual degree will be better but I've already done lots of research on the modules and checked the modules descriptor and I can't imagine myself enjoying studying this. Of course I will have to If I get rejected.
I know you might wonder why I accepted the offer and went to this uni, It's just that at that time it was such a appealing offer especially with how bad my circumstances were It was the best unconditional offer I got out of the other offers. And unfortunately I'm stuck feeling lost now.

@PQ I just wanted to ask about your responses on a post about transferring after foundation year on this forum https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7432509
You talked about SFE and when one should withdraw. I'm trying to transfer to University of Sheffield, they gave me a conditional offer with the conditions being achieving above 60% in all modules.
I had to let my university know about transferring because they had to provide me with a transcript and because the conditions University of Sheffield wanted didn't match my foundation year that has a pass or fail system and no modules.

Can you please help me and explain what you said about SFE and by the way I don't receive maintenance loans.

Thank you in advance
Just tagging @PQ as it looks like the above wasn’t linked to them.

Asking for a transcript and applying elsewhere isn’t the same as formally withdrawing from your course.

When you speak to your current university make it clear that you are applying elsewhere but won’t make a decision about whether you want to continue on your current course or transfer until August.
When you apply for student finance for next year then you can let SFE know that you intend to move to a new university and course from September 2025. But you’re a continuing student and won’t be leaving your current course until the end of the academic year.

Thank you very much for your response! When do you think I should apply for SFE? In August? The University of Sheffield gave me until September to give my results which I will probably get in June but I will postpone withdrawing until the start of August, would that be fine?

Do you want to be guaranteed to be paid on time in September? If so then apply for student finance for September before the end of May

I don't really mind as long as SFE knows that I might no longer stay at my current uni because I don't receive a maintenance loan. Sorry I'm just a bit slow but what difference would it make if I reapply for student finance now instead of May? And should I let SFE know I'm transferring? Should I call them? I officially finish on the 8th of May when I hand in my portfolio. But my last lesson is on the 8th of April.

I think I might contact SFE to tell them that. I haven't told my uni I'm transferring only my academic mentor and lecturer who is in charge of marking my work. But it all depends on whether I meet the conditions or not

There's no point contacting SFE. When you apply for 2025 funding there's a question about whether you'll be continuing on the same course/university or if it will change. If you say you'll be changing course you can enter the details of the current course.

Unless you have followed your current university process to formally withdraw from your course then your current university will assume you plan to progress in september

I understand now.. I think. I'm not going to formally withdraw from my uni until September but I will apply for Student finance at the start of May, how does that sound? Is that a good plan?

Sorry for spamming you I swear this is the last time. My last task is due on the 8th of may I get the marks around June. So I think I'll apply for SFE after I hand in the final task but I won't withdraw until September.
Thank you very much your help!! It's very kind of you
