What actually goes into training to become a teacher (primary school) ?

I am currently studying for an English literature degree and I just wondered how easy or hard would it be for me to train as a primary school teaching assistant with that degree in 2026 or later or am I completely hopeless? I also wondered if there is a certain criteria to follow to be able to teach. (obviously not including DBS cause that's obvious) I'm only asking because somebody mentioned it to me and now I'm curious.

As long as you have passes in English & Maths GCSEs, then with your degree (and I assume an A level in English that got you towards that degree) you should meet the academic requirements for training.

What I would recommend is contacting some nearby primary schools / any schools you have a connection to and asking if you can do a week's work experience in one. Get a feel if it's for you and if it is - then use that time observing to figure out exactly what it takes to be able to teach well.
