Help ‼️))))gcse english resit

Hello. I currently am in Year 12, and I have applied for gcse resit for English Language (AQA), since I got 5 for English Language (7for Literature). And if everything goes as scheduled, I will be sitting the resits on 5th and 7th of November, which is in less than two weeks.

However, during a medic conference today, I have realised that resitting gcse language might disadvantage my application A LOT more than just leaving the grade 5 alone. And I’m now panicking, since I have already registered, and paid for the exam, all ready to go. (And the school will be on half term until the 7th.)

What should I do in this situation? Would I be able to possibly cancel the exam? I don’t think not showing up is the right way to go since I will only get U for the resit grade.. Please could someone help me on this.

P.s. I am considering a course in Medicine, or VetMed, which was the initial reason of me applying for resit (many medical universities require 6+ for English, but not all) ..

How would resitting damage your application?

Whoever told you this is talking nonsense. Many people resit Maths or English GCSEs for entry to a STEM degree, and Unis do not penalise them for doing this.

Many unis like Edinburgh, and especially medicine/vetmed unis don’t accept gcse resit candidates

Do have a definitive list or is this just 'I've heard'?

"Many"? If so you face a choice: a) apply to a restricted set of universities that accept a 5 in English language, or b) apply to a restricted set of universities that don't accept GCSE resits.

Which group would give you the greater chance of getting in? Edinburgh for example, is ruled out on both grounds. (Though I'm not completely convinced that their "first sitting" rule applies to GCSEs.)

Sounds to me like you should resit. Although, if you want to be sure, why not give Edinburgh a call and ask?

Yes I decided to resit English when I first thought that the number of the unis that accept resits are going to be greater than the number of unis that accept <6 in eng, but because the medicmentor conference yesterday has told me otherwise and to leave the 5 alone,, that made me panic a lot

One University - not 'many'.

What exactly did this conference say about the issue?
Hi, I was in the same position last year. I would think not resitting the GCSE would disadvantage your application as nearly all medical universities require a grade 6 in English Language and Maths. I can only think of one university that does not accept GCSE resits which is Lancaster University. I have applied for medicine this year with a GCSE resit.
please resist and don't listen to them as if the univ doesn't like resting then let them take your first grade as in UCAS you will add the two grades the resist and the one before .
So say you add grade 5 English lang
and maybe grade 6 English lang( or more hopefully)

Then this opens a lot of univs that accept the new GCSE . Don't limit your options because of some talk .

That she has mentored a lot of students with their med uni applications, and that she’s seen a lot of students where they would have had more chances of getting into medical if they hadn’t resat and left their 5s alone..

Thank you. After reading all of your responses and having done a bit of research of my own, I made a final decision of resitting as planned. As other mentioned, I figured that lots of other unis do accept gcse resits(RVC, Glasgow, even Cambridge!) and maybe me resitting might even show a sense of resilience/commitment ?
Plus I didn’t know that I could enter the original grade as well as the resit grade. Which is great. Thank you so much for your replies.

There are very few med schools that accept a 5 in Eng Lang for medicine.
Bristol, Cambridge, Plymouth and St Andrews. Also Oxford, Newcastle, QUB and Leeds (though GCSE scoring is a large part of both of their selection scoring, so may well not make shortlist for interview with a 5, unless all other GCSEs are excellent)
Glasgow have apparently said they will accept a C/5 in Eng Lang with a 6/B in Eng Lit

There are maybe 6 med schools that do not accept GCSE resits.

So you rule out 6 by resitting or limit yourself to probably 4-8 by not resitting.
No brainer, resit

You must declare all your grades on UCAS or your application is fraudulent
