Geography as a fourth A-Level...

So... i'm in year 11 and looking at sixth-forms, I want to do Architecture (either uni of degree apprenticeships). This means that to keep all of my options open, Product Design, Maths and Physics are pretty much non-negotiable. I really enjoy Geography at GCSE and it's a fairly easy 9 for me, I am reluctant to give it up but think that it will be too much at sixth form for something that is not necessary for what I want to do.

I'm not sure what to do, opinions?

I'm in year 13 currently and have been taking geography since January (swapped from physics) and I've found it really manageable even with missing two topics, the human topics are globalisation, place, and urban environments whilst the physical ones we do are water and carbon cycle, coasts, and ecosystems so your alevel will vary depending on that but a lot of it is basically year 11 triple biology at least for the ecosystems topic and if you can do it doesn't get much harder. Doing four alevels is intensive but I think geography would be the most manageable if you did decide to go for it, I originally thought I was going to do a maths degree but am now applying for ecology and natural science so I would always be an advocate for sticking with something you enjoy!

Maths and/or physics are only required or preferred by five out of over 50 architecture courses. So you can easily drop one or both of those subjects to do A levels that you prefer. Most unis don't have any subject requirements for architecture (have a look at this thread). You need to choose subjects that you enjoy so that you will do well in them as high grades are required for many courses. The only time a fourth A level is justified is if it is further maths.

As @normaw said, physics AND maths are not non-negotiable. Do you enjoy them? How are your predicted grades looking? If you were to only take one of them alongside product design and geography that would still keep your options open. Id suggest you pick product design and then 2 of maths, physics and geography depending on which you enjoy the most. I can help you to decide if you need based on your opinions of these subjects and your current predicted grades 🙂 From the thread normaw liked, it looks like the combination that would keep the most options open is maths, product design and geography for you.
