York vs Exeter for psych

Looking to study psychology next year and trying to work out where to apply to. The courses are both really good and have the same entry requirements but I’ve not managed to make it to exeter for the open days.

Has anyone been to both so could compare the general uni vibes for both (and is exeter as rah as social media suggests?)

i loved the open day! it gave a really good insight into life on campus. It was also the first one I went to and set the standard very high! I really loved the college system too and would love to end up living on campus east if I get in!

Does it feel like there’s a big divide between the campuses? And, as I’m doing psych the lectures will all be on west, do you know if the walk between is okay? I love walking and the area is gorgeous i’m just thinking about any 9am lectures 🥴

Thanks so much!

I'm so glad you liked it! Campus East is really lovely, so I'm sure you'd have a great time living there!

Honestly it doesn't feel like a big divide, especially once you've settled in. The walk between campuses is very manageable and it's a really scenic walk along the paths so it can be quite relaxing to get your steps in. There are also cycle paths if you felt like bringing a bike. Finally, if it's bad weather, the shuttle bus runs regularly so you have plenty of options.

I know lots of students who lived on Campus East and then had their studies on the other campus, so you'll probably have several housemates you can make the trip with, or just listen to a good podcast! Once you've got into a routine, it'll probably feel like second nature - I used my time walking to lectures to catch up with friends or even call my mum for a few mins!

Hi @Anonymous,

It's great to hear you like the sound of the course at Exeter! As a student here, I thought I could help to give you a bit more insight into what life at Exeter is like.

I'm from London and chose Exeter because the campus is so green and beautiful - it's so relaxing to walk around every day surrounded by so many trees and green spaces! Town is also only a 10 minute walk away and has everything you need, as well as lots of lovely places to explore, go out for food or drinks or go out at night.

I love the size of campus too - it's not so big that it's overwhelming and you'll always bump into a familiar face, but equally I'm in my final year and I still don't feel like I've outgrown it here. The staff and students are also so friendly - there is such a nice community feel around campus which I love.

There is such a range of societies at Exeter, so you'll definitely find people with similar interests to you, which is great when you first move to university. I play social netball here, and have also been a part of Taylor Swift Society and even Wine Soc which is so fun! I've also just joined Surf Soc which is amazing because I'm learning a new skill and get to explore lovely parts of Cornwall at the same time!

In terms of the students here, I've found that the student community at Exeter is very diverse and there are students from all different backgrounds. I've made friends with people from different countries, religions, education backgrounds etc and everyone I have met has been extremely friendly and welcoming. Of course, to an extent there is a proportion of students from private school backgrounds, but I haven't found this to be limiting in any way at all.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions about life in Exeter!
