Finding Medical Work Experience

Does anyone have any tips for finding work experience? How should I write my emails to increase my chance of being succesful?
Definitely go into local surgeries/pharmacies/hospitals and see what they can offer. When you're personally speaking to them it's a lot more direct and they're more likely to see your interest and offer work experience. If you can't visit, then call and then email.

Also keep a look out on places like Springpod, Medic Mentor and Speakers For Schools as they provide work experience opportunities (in-person and virtual).

Hope this helps

Hi there, I definitely agree it is a good plan to go in person and ask for work experience first and follow this up with an email. I found that they were more likely to get back to me if they had already met me.

Many universities run a type of virtual work experience that might be worth looking into too. I know Southampton have one and some other unis do too. Local care homes and hospices might also be willing to help you out with some work experience too.

Medical schools do understand that it is very difficult to find lots of work experience, so try to reflect on what you have learned and why this is going to help you at medical school. They will likely ask you to discuss what you have learned from your work experience during the interview and it can be something interesting to reflect on in your personal statement too.

Good luck! Please let me know if I can help further.
