Year 12 advice

As a year 12 student who is looking into becoming a lawyer, what would you guys recommend me to do in year 12?
Right now I am volunteering for an animal shelter, exploring more hobbies but want to do more things that will make me stand out as I’m aware how competitive being a lawyer is !
Thank you

I recommend places like springpod, which has a virtual work experience for law and also uni taster subjects for law, which you can complete in your own time! I'm assuming your school would do work experience so you could do looking around for such opportunities or even ask your school. Also look at unis for taster days, lectures etc that interest you. Or even essay competitions, debating etc. So basically anything super curricular that is law!
Hoped that helps

Now may be a good time to read The Rule Of Law by Tom Bingham. Keep an eye out for debating, mooting, and mock trial events, and for essay prizes some of which you may see advertised on the websites of the Bar Council, the Law Society, and the four Inns of Court (Middle Temple, Inner Temple, Lincoln's Inn, and Gray's Inn).

Keep up with news and public affairs, particularly on subjects such as criminal justice, human rights, environmental protection, financial services regulation, and international law. Reading The Economist is a great way to stay well-informed. Be aware that the stance of the magazine is resolutely Classical to Neo Liberal Centrist, but make up your own mind about such things.

Focus most of all on heading towards A grades or IB equivalent. Read as much as you can about everything you can.

PS: go to as many university open days as you can. Perhaps visit at least one big-city university in London or a large Midlands or Northern city, one collegiate university (if your academic profile makes you a realistic candidate for one), and one campus university (examples include York, Lancaster, Kent, and Warwick).

Hi, it’s awesome to hear that you’re already volunteering at an animal shelter!

Have you thought about joining a debate or public speaking club? It can be super helpful for building confidence in speaking and arguing your points, which is what lawyers do all the time. If there isn’t one at your school, maybe you could start it!

Since you’re exploring hobbies, why not dive into something that relates to law? Joining a youth council or an advocacy group can give you insight into community issues and show you care about making a difference. Plus, it’s a good chance to meet people who are also interested in social justice or legal matters.

Looking for internships or work experience at law firms would be a big win too. Reach out to local firms, legal aid places, or even family friends who work in law. Even if it’s just shadowing someone for a day, you’ll get a real feel for what lawyers do.

Don’t forget to network! Look for any local events, talks, or workshops related to law and try to attend. Even if it feels a bit awkward at first, you might meet some cool people and gain insights about the field. And remember, it’s all about balance! Make sure you’re enjoying your time in year 12. Pursue what makes you happy while preparing for your future.

You've got this!
