1st or 2nd year entry

i intend on studying maths at strathclyde or glasgow next year, i’m wanting to hear from anyone who did 2nd year entry and if they think it’s worth it. my pros are that im just really eager to start learning more maths and i feel i may get a little bit bored recapping a lot of advanced higher topics in first year, i dont really have an interest in studying other subjects in first year so im happy to just only study maths, it will be cheaper only having 4 years worth of student loans compared to the 5 years for the MMath degree. my drawbacks are that i worry it may be harder to make friends within my course when a lot of people will know each other already from first year, and that the higher workload of 2nd year may mean i have less time to have fun in first year. advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey Anon! Apologies your thread has gone unanswered for a while, but thought it might be worth still dropping in to help if I can 🙂 One of our current MMath students is available on Unibuddy too if you'd like to chat directly with Amy here?

In terms of your pros and cons - I agree with what you've found here. Lots of students going straight in to 2nd year benefit from challenging themselves academically, and finshing their degree earlier. I think if you throw yourself in to your studies and put yourself out there socially then you'd make friends with others easily, but I can appreciate this can feel more challenging if you're coming in to Year 2 entry. You won't be the only one starting from Year 2 but lots of students will have studied and settled in together in their first year.

It's definitely an individual decision to consider. Reach out to our student ambassador above who might be helpful in talking more about different classes and teaching styles to give you a flavour for each year of study.

Good luck!!
