The Student Room Group

I am wasting so much time watching stuff on the internet in my accomodation room

I feel sucked into the black hole of my laptop, just keeping my eyeballs on the screen, watching Youtube for 8 - 10 hours. Only getting out of my flat room for food and lectures. Worried its going to be a common theme for my first academic year.

Getting stuck in endless screen time is so normal, especially when starting uni, but a few small changes can really help. Try setting little goals each day, like taking a quick walk or studying in a different spot, just to break up the screen time. Using something like the Pomodoro Technique can make studying feel more manageable, and you could even set YouTube as a reward after a productive session. Finding a study buddy or joining a club could help too; it gives you a reason to get out and connect with people. It’s totally okay to feel like this, and taking small steps to explore your surroundings and create a routine will help make things feel more balanced. However everyone has a social battery and when this runs out there is no shame in having time to yourself.

Hey @McDonaldsEmploy,

If you feel like you're struggling to build a routine and get the most out of your university experience, I'd definitely recommend reaching out to your university's student support services. Having a quick chat with your personal tutor (or booking a meeting with any counselling/learning support teams available) can help you gain a better idea of what can be done to make your schedule more effective, and will put staff in a better position to support you in the future.

It's also a good idea to talk to your flatmates, friends and family members about how you're feeling. Maybe you could plan a day out with your flatmates, or come up with some affordable activities (e.g. local nature walks, picnics) that you and your friends could do together?

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
