Is Business Management really that bad?

So I would be applying to russel groups for business management/international management (KCL/UCL etc). - Ive seen alot of jokes that this degree is worthless in general. I dont really see how thats the case?

Is it a good degree? Should I apply?

Always take these things with a pinch of salt.1) They're jokes 2) Who is saying them? IE. Is it anyone involved in recruitment or with entrepreneurial experience?

Hello there,

Absolutely not! Business or management are very respected degrees which can open up a lot of doors and future career opportunities, especially if your degree includes a placement.

If you enjoy management as a subject, if it motivates you and you have a few ideas about which direction you want to go into in the future and you think a degree in business will help you with that, then you should go for it. You will find the experience a lot easier if you are doing something you enjoy.

I would caution against using anecdotes and jokes as points of truth and look into more reliable sources of data such as graduate prospects, universities' links with employers, Prospects and what current students think about their course.

I hope this helps and very best of luck!

Hi @Random3 👋

As a current Business and Management student, I’m really happy with my choice! This degree opens up lots of career options and equips you with valuable skills like leadership, problem-solving, financial management, and strategic thinking all of which are in high demand across various industries.

The University of Leicester prides itself on being a research-intensive university like many of the Russell Group Universities. I chose to study Business and Management at Leicester’s School of Business because the course covers everything from management and marketing to HR, business ethics, and innovation. Plus, our dedicated Careers Team offers support and guidance to help students secure year-in-industry placements, giving them a boost in employability.

I hope this highlights why a Business and Management degree is worth considering 😉 You’ll definitely gain solid academic knowledge and practical skills that will set you up for success in a variety of careers. Wishing you the best of luck with your decision!

as someone who completed first year of business management, i completely hated it, it was so useless for mw and not mentally stimulating at all atleast during the first year and now the only year as i dropped the course. however if you want to do a fairly easy degree and graduate with a good grade easily, then go for it.

what course did you change to? What career do you want to do? Thanks
Perhaps not bad per se but in most cases an undergraduate business degree won't give you any specific opportunities that any other undergraduate degree might. Given you could spend the same three years learning about say, Egyptian hieroglyphs, coral life cycles, Tibetan nomadic pastoralists, Deontology, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the molecular basis of disease, first hand accounts of the fall of Rome, the design history leading to the modern fitted kitchen, jet engine propulsion, or any other number of things it's just like...hard for me to understand why instead of all of those you'd rather study business management when you end up potentially in the same jobs at the end of it all anyway.

hey, so i changed to accounting and finance. way more mentally stimulating so far, if your uni is accredited, you can claim exemptions on professional exams after finishing your uni. plus has way more 'career security' if thats the right word, like the degree has an aim, you wont be stuck doing retail like many the people i have met with a business management degree have ended up in. business management which is so general that its useless you have top notch connections ( you will have to network still with an accounting degree but its not that bad compared to with a business degree).

you can tranfer to a uni that is accredited, btw accreditation only leads to at most 8 exemptions out of 14 for the professional exams
Hello there!

As a final-year International Business Management student, I can confidently say that a degree in Business Management or International Management is highly valuable. These programs provide a broad and adaptable skill set in areas like leadership, strategy, finance, and cross-cultural management, opening doors to careers in consulting, finance, marketing, and more.
The Program is allowing graduates to pursue opportunities in various fields.

To make the most of your degree, prioritize practical experience through internships, placements, or networking. The value of the degree ultimately depends on your passion, career goals, and how you utilize the opportunities it provides. If you're interested in the field, it’s a strong choice with significant potential.

I hope that helps! Good luck!
