Classics or Latin

Hi! I’m a current Year 11 who wants to study philosophy at university - for my A-levels I can’t decide between latin and classics - advice? Thankyou!

Classics, I take classics (OCR) and there is a topic on philosophers of ancient Greece so it might tie in nicely with philosophy.
I second the Classics, unless for some reason you feel that you are stronger at language learning than on learning history.

Classics is more relevant for sure. But if you already study and find Latin easier, then go with the one that you know you can achieve well in.

I’d say Latin - the linguistic rigour and logic would really help with philosophy.

hi, i have just started year 12 and i am studying both. i would recommend classics to be better as even though it is enjoyable, latin is a lot of work!

As someone who does Classics and Latin, do notttt do Latin. Loved it at GCSE, and the literature side is pretty similar in difficulty I’ve found which is good, but language is hell!! However, grade boundaries aren’t too awful. Classics is fab, my favourite a level by far!

If you are very, very good at memorising vocabularies and has a good sense for grammar, take Latin. Otherwise Philosophy. I had decided for Latin at A levels as student. You can ask more and personal questions, if you like.
