Top 3 things to do in your uni town/city

Hi everyone,

Would love to hear what everyone's top 3 favourite things to do in their uni city/town. Although, I don't feel like I have loads of spare time at the moment with deadlines :s-smilie: it would be great to get some inspiration for when I do.

Also think it is a good opportunity to give those who are applying to university an idea on what students get up to at each uni.

My top three for Kingston would be:

1. Galleries, exhibitions and events!! Living so close to central London means there is always something to do. These past few weeks I have been to so many exhibitions such as Naomi, Tracey Emin and Sophie Tea Art Gallery. I also went to the Tate Late which was really fun. And I have attended store openings like the Remass store on Brick Lane and Urban Outfitters in Kingston where I got a free tooth gem.

2. The river. With all the pubs and restaurants it is always such a nice atmosphere along the Thames in Kingston. I enjoy getting takeaway food and going sitting by the river with friends.

3. Studying in cafe's. I have recently started studying with friends in cafe's as I find it a great way to spend time together yet also feel productive. There as so many to choose from in Kingston, so always a great change of scenery and new food and drink to try.

I can't wait to hear everyone else's responses

Hi!

This is a great idea- I love doing new things so thought I would suggest three things that I really like doing in Sheffield.

1- Going to nearby parks! Sheffield has some great parks and green spaces just outside of the city which are great when you need a bit of relaxation time. I find going on walks really helps my mental health and just helps me to clear my heads especially when am feeling stressed about deadlines! Sheffield also has the peak district really close by which is great for longer walks/hikes and just general nice views!

2- Going to try new places to eat with my friends! I love doing this and finding new, nice places to eat and drink which are student friendly! There are loads of places like this in Sheffield and like to try new ones as often as I can. I also agree that studying in cafes is a great way of seeing friends and doing something fun but also getting your work done at the same time which I great around deadline time!

3- Going shopping! I love going shopping and I really like going to Meadowhall when I fancy a good shopping day. Me and my friends will often get the train/tram here as it is really quick and then just spend the day shopping, eating food and sometimes doing other things like going to the cinema or the arcades!

I hope this helps give some inspiration!

Hi Grace,

This is a really great idea!

My top three for Liverpool Hope would be:

The waterfront: Liverpool's waterfront and Albert Dock is filled with lots of bars/restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops, and museums and galleries. It is also an amazing place to go of an evening for a sunset stroll with a coffee, especially after a long day or week!

Nearby parks: Liverpool Hope is nearby to a few lovely parks that are really ideal for a lunchtime walk or a picnic in the summer. Calderstones is the closest, but we also have Sefton and Greenbank nearby!

Creative culture: Liverpool as a city is home to so many theatres, music venues and art galleries. In saying that, we are the top filmed city outside of London due to our amazing architecture, so a lot of filming takes place throughout the year for different projects. If you are into acting, there are always plenty of callouts for extras so this is something you can definitely get involved with.

Hope this gives some ideas!

Hi @hallamstudents

These sound great! I have been meaning to visit the Peak District it looks lovely, let me know if there's anything in particular that I don't want to miss when I visit.

I wish the weather was nicer in term time for more outdoor activities 🥲

Thanks for the inspo!

Hi @Liverpool Hope University

I love Liverpool 🥰 I live not too far from there when I am at home.

Albert Dock is great and yes definitely the parks too! Stanley Park is also nice and it's in-between the two football stadiums, would have been a good one to go to when Taylor Swift was there 😆

Thanks for the suggestions!

Love this idea! I'm in my third-year at York St. John, my top York activities would be...

1.

The Christmas markets!! York's Christmas markets are really popular, there's lots of stalls to visit, selling everything from deserts, cheeses, hot chocolates, Christmas decorations, and so much more🤗

2.

The cat café! We have a café called the Cat's Whiskers, where you can have tea, coffee, and cake, in a quaint little café home to lots of cute cats. Visitors to the café can apply to adopt the cats too🥰

3.

Brunch! There's lots of popular stops for a brunch date - my favourites are coffee culture, and rise! You can get food and a coffee for under £10😊

Hi 😊

I love this idea! Here are some of my favourite things to do in Preston.

1 - Shopping Centre - Whenever I'm bored I normally head to the local shopping centre with my friends, either to actually buy things or just do some window shopping. There is so many shops in the nearby town and new ones are constantly popping up, so we always find somewhere new! 🛍️

2 - Park - There a large local park called Avenham Park. It is lovely in the spring and summer and an excellent place for a nice stroll or a picnic. There is also a japanese gardens there too! 🌳🌲🌸

3 - Food - There are so many food places around Preston! There is a food from various cultures scattered all around the city, so its fun to explore and see what's new to try. 🍔🌯🍲

I hope these are some useful ideas!

Hi @Kingston Grace

What a fab thread! 🙂

Here in Birmingham there's always lots to do but some of my faves are...

1.

Second hand shopping and Independent Markets! I love a good shopping day, but a student budget can't always be stretched for extra shopping, so charity shops, car boots and vintage shopping ca always help. And for me, it's nice to get out of the city centre sometimes and explore nearby towns for some bargains.

2.

Cinema. Some cinemas offer £5 tickets when you buy online, or student discount, and whether I'm with friends or going alone, a cinema trip never disappoints.

3.

Something crafty...I love getting involved with some arts and crafts like pottery painting cafes or sewing events, so I always keep a look out for pop up events in Birmingham.

Looking forward to seeing some more ideas! 🙂

Hi there,

This is such a great question! It can be hard to narrow it down, but here are my top three for Chester:

Exploring the city - there is so much to do in the city that I love. Particularly exploring the Cathedral, shopping in the Rows, and taking evening walks alongside the River. New places are always popping up, so it's great to be able to explore and find my best new spot for studying or hanging out!

Markets, parades, and festive events - I adore all of the celebrations that happen throughout the year. The Midsummer Watch, Halloween, and Christmas parades are so fun to go to. The Christmas Market is something I also look forward to each year, and it makes the city feel that much cozier. The New Chester Market is also a great spot with so much to do.

Chester Zoo - I really enjoyed visiting Chester Zoo, and I have plans to go back soon. It's a little pricier and outside of the city, but absolutely worth it. There's a reason people come from all over to go!

There's a LOT more to do in and around Chester, plus there are great transport links to Liverpool, Manchester, and other areas. I hope this helps to give some inspiration!
