Year 12 Work Experience

I am in Year 12 and doing Maths, Further maths, and Economics. I want to do Econ at a good uni and then go into investment banking. I have to do 2 days work experience next year is it hard to try to do it at an investment bank? Where should I go to do the work experience?

I would talk to your teachers about this and ask for their advice, but in the meantime here are a few ideas for you.

Investment Banking Internships

Summer Analyst Programs: Many investment banks offer competitive summer analyst programs for students, often seen as a fast track to full-time positions after university.

Boutique and Regional Banks: Smaller banks may provide internships with more hands-on experience and a chance to learn a wide range of skills, especially in financial modeling and client relations.

Financial Services and Accounting Firms

Big Four Accounting Firms (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG): These firms offer experience in corporate finance, transaction advisory, and valuation, which are highly relevant to investment banking.

Asset Management or Private Equity Firms: Gaining experience in asset management or private equity can provide insight into investments, portfolio management, and financial analysis, all relevant to investment banking.

Corporate Finance Departments

Large Corporations: Many large companies have finance departments with roles in corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, and strategic planning, offering experience that translates well to investment banking.

Consulting Firms: Strategy consulting firms like McKinsey or BCG have financial consulting roles that can offer exposure to business valuation, strategic advice, and financial analytics.

Stock Brokerage or Financial Advisory Firms

Brokerage Firms: Work experience with stockbrokers or wealth management firms provides insights into financial markets and client advisory services.

Financial Advisory Roles: Advising clients on investments or savings can build skills in financial analysis and communication, which are valuable for investment banking.

Best of luck!
