Are you enjoying university so far?

I was going to go to university this year but I had to defer because of a family crisis and last minute doubts. I still can go next year, if I want. But I am curious about peoples experiences. How are you enjoying university so far? Do you think it is good value for money? Do you regret deciding to go to university instead of getting a job or doing something else?

Heya!

I'm now in my second year of studying Sociology with Social Policy at the University of Sheffield, and I love it! It is what I expected because I had gone to open days and knew people that were already at university. However it was definitely an adjustment to living with my parents to being in a completely new area not knowing anyone. But societies really helped me to settle in and find my people with similar interests to me, as well as getting to know people on my course.

More specifically about Sheffield - I love the mix of living in a city and having green spaces. The botanical gardens is just down my road and it's only a 20 minute bus ride into the peaks. But I also have everything I need near me with a wide range of shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, etc all within five minutes of my house.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Hi there @BenJammin123456 , although navigating university life can be a challenge at times, going to uni opens up many opportunities to meet new people of different walks of life from all over the world as well as open up new connections and industries that would require a degree certification to work in. Living away from home for the first time, it was definitely difficult in adjusting in my first year, but my time at Kingston has opened up many opportunities! I hope you come to enjoy your uni life experience too! Hope this helps 🙂

Hi @BenJammin123456 ,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear you've been going through a difficult time lately.

I personally found university difficult because I put far too much pressure on myself and didn't do as many other things such as societies, clubs, seeing friends as I wanted to - but that's my only regret. I do not regret going to uni, as although it took a while to adjust to the new way of working and asking for help, I really enjoyed my course. Plus, having a degree behind me opened a lot more doors to employment as many, many jobs ask for a degree, many not specifying a subject.

If it is the right decision for you, then going to uni is a brilliant experience and you will make many good memories and have a lot of opportunities opened up to you. Just make sure you take care of yourself and take advantage of other opportunities (clubs, societies, exploring) as well as the academic side.

Hope this helps and best of luck in your decision!

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you've had a tough time recently. This is a great question to ask current university students, so hopefully the answers help you to come closer to a decision.

Everyone's university experience is wildly different, and university might not be for everyone. However, it can also be a great choice if you make the most of it. I think value for money depends heavily on where you'd study, what you'd study, and how you'd make the most of your time there. If you only attend classes and don't do anything in or out of this, I'd say it wouldn't be worth it. But if you would do more than this, including participating in sports and societies, being an active member of the city and university community, and make the most of the opportunities and support available - then it absolutely is worth it!

I think going to university was the right decision for me. I was quite introverted and unsure of my future plans, but I chose to go anyway. Now in my final year, I can say for sure that the things that I have been a part of have been invaluable, I have enjoyed my studies, and have had incredible opportunities to further myself personally. Although I'm still unsure of my future, I think it has been an extremely valuable four years.

Living and studying in Chester was a great choice for me too. It is very far from home, which encouraged me to become independent fast, although it has been tough at times. The chance to study abroad also changed me for the better, and is something I'd recommend everyone tries if they can.

I hope this helps,
