i’m leaving university…. what now??😨

Coming to the end of your time at university? Lost about what to do next? Don’t panic! There are so many options and opportunities out there for you! 😬

A bit about me!
I’m Hannah, a BSc Psychology graduate and an MSc Psychological Wellbeing graduate! I spent 5 years at DMU and loved it. It felt like my home and I was so sad to leave. I felt lost and confused when I was arriving at the end of my time here. I worked at DMU as a student ambassador and emerged myself in university life. I was so nervous and apprehensive about leaving DMU and entering the world of work. But with help and thanks to the DMU careers team I am now a trainee primary teacher and I AM LOVING IT!!!!📚🏫✏️📎🍎

There are so many options and careers and paths to go down. It can be very overwhelming. I had a few options I was considering and I was finding it difficult to choose. I knew I wanted to work with children and I have always wanted to be an educator. Primary teaching seemed like a great option for me. I decided on this route, but there were so many options and choices for how to train. I spoke to the DMU careers team and we looked at options. I narrowed it down and began to apply. 😳

The application process was daunting. I really wanted to succeed and was unsure how to do so. I booked a slot with the careers team for them to look at my application, CV and personal statement. They gave me advice and tips and I landed multiple interviews!! I was so happy and excited!😆

I practiced for my interviews. I went through potential questions they might ask. I even had a mock interview with someone from the careers team! They gave me great feedback that I used in the real thing. 💻

I had my first interview with Leicester and Leicestershire SCITT (school centred initial teacher training). I felt so confident in my interview with my skills I had learned and they offered me a place then and there! I was so happy and I felt so proud of myself and my hard work. I was still sad to be leaving DMU but I felt like I had things in place to help me start my career in education. *🏫

So, if you’re feeling lost, nervous or anxious about finishing and don’t know what to do next- don’t worry! There will be so many people in the same boat. It can feel so overwhelming with all the career options and routes. Don’t panic! If you need advice speak to your university’s careers team. They can help so much with so many different aspects! 📚

Please feel free to ask me anything!
I hope this helps!🩵

HI Hannah

This is a really lovely post. I did a BA Hons Sociology and an MSc in Psychology, I think compared to some degree's the social sciences can create a sense of insecurity as some subjects like construction, art and engineering have obvious tangible things that you create as part of your assessments. Social Science's is a lot of essays and exams.

There are so many different careers you can have with the social sciences;

I went into teaching and have taught on an Access to HE diploma or two for over 10 years and I love it

Also, many blue chip companies have Graduate Programs to fast track you into Management too.

Local and central Government

Social work (with additional study, the MSc in Social Work is very popular, and there are a few national fast tracks programs too)
