- personal care (washing, toileting, brushing teeth etc)
- taking observations & NEWS scores & escalation as appropriate
- maintaining infection control & environmental hygiene (light cleaning/tidying of wards, cleaning equipment after use etc)
- helping patients eat/drink
- helping patients mobilize
- supervision/maintaining patient safety
- assisting nursing/medical staff as requested
- teamwork with other HCAs and nursing staff
- reassurance/social support for patients
- communicating with patients/family/other teams
- record-keeping & paperwork
- low-level clinical skills (dependent on band & trust what you're allowed to do, might include stuff like cannulation or recording ECGs but you'll generally train for this rather than do it straight away at entry level)

And most importantly - having the best job ever! I've been an HCA for 8 years and I love it so much

Hi ArcticFox99,
If you don't mind, would you please tell me how to get a HCA job if you are a graduate Biomedical science (Hons.) degree holder within Cardiff or even somewhere else. I would like to get some placements/internships within the healthcare sector and would appreciate it if you could share some insight.

Thank you!

If you're looking for a standard HCA job, go on trac.jobs (the official NHS job board) and sort by band under 'nursing and midwifery' (you can also search by location or trust but I've found that often doesn't show up all the available listings so you're better off just scrolling through). You're looking for anything called either HCA, HCSW or nursing assistant/nursing support worker (not nursing associate, that's a separate registrant-only role). You apply direct through that platform. Band 2 roles are generally entry-level and Band 3s are for people with some experience, although it might be worth applying for both given your qualifications, especially if you have stuff like a venupuncture certificate (sorry idk what exactly biomedical sciences covers). The recruitment process is pretty easy, just a standard interview and references/background checks.

If you're looking for a placement or internship rather than a regular job that would be a separate process, I don't know much about that unfortunately! Your uni careers service might be a good place to start, or just ask local hospitals 🤷🏼*♂️
