hi everyone, i’m still deciding on what course to study next year and is graphic design still a good degree to get nowadays or should I pursue something different?
Hi there @imy05 , while in the midst of deciding what courses to study in university, I would highly recommend going for an Open Day to speak to current students, course tutors, and to get a feel for the uni! You can also sign up for various subject areas and speak to different tutors to better understand what each course is offering as well as broadening your options! You may want to consider Kingston University's Graphic Design course as one of your options 🙂 it is well regarded for its creative programme and amazing open access workshop facilities! Hope this helps ☺️
Some questions to ask yourself: If not graphic design, what are other areas of design you interested in? What do you hope to get out of your uni experience?

You're right to ask questions like this. As a profession, graphic design is likely to change rapidly in the next 5 or 10 years because of AI and wider economic issues. However, it's always been a very loose term. What graphic designers do now is very different to what they did 30 years ago. Graphic design degrees can lead to all sorts of other careers too.
As long as you aim for the top and learn plenty of digital tools, not just the Adobe basics it's still a great career path. If it helps, the decent agencies are paying in the mid£30ks as a starting salary for graduates, and c£45k after 5 years.

Choosing a course is a big decision. Graphic design is still a valuable degree, but it’s not just about creating pretty visuals, it’s about communication and problem-solving. With brands relying heavily on visuals for social media, websites, and even AR/VR experiences, graphic design remains relevant, offering diverse career paths like branding, UI/UX design, motion graphics, and even game design. It’s an evergreen field with freelance flexibility and creative satisfaction. However, it’s competitive, especially with tools like Canva and AI solutions, so staying ahead means sharpening your skills and embracing tech-driven areas like motion design or coding. If you’re unsure, consider exploring related fields like UI/UX design, digital marketing, or animation, which combine creativity with innovation. My advice? Start small, take an online course or try freelancing to see if it truly excites you. In the end, the right degree is the one that aligns with your passions and goals. What sparks your interest? Creative freedom, tech innovation, or something else?
