MAT 2024 Post-exam Thoughts

How did everyone find the Oxford MAT entrance exam this year?

I would say it was easier than past papers but with it being on a computer it made it so bad for me 😭😭 made so many stupid mistakes and lack of time management

Yeah, a lot of people have had similar experiences. Don't worry, you're not the only one.

I feel like 4 mark mcq were harder than past papers(I did the practice paper of this year’s format before and only got one mcq wrong) and the time was really tight for me.
Couldn’t finish one long question because I’m slow typer and I wasn’t prepared to type this much.
I guessed 3 mcq and I got one wrong.
I feel like I’ll get 70-78 so I’ll be praying for an interview.
Hopefully the average score is low this year

I feel like you are in a very comfortable position to compete; fingers crossed!

Thank you! A bit off topic, but do you think that having a 1.5 year education gap due to relocation because of war and being forced to work part-time to support you family financially would factor into my application for Oxford, or do they usually ignore such things?

I'd say it depends which college you've applied to, some say they don't particularly care about background and its all academics/results, and some take into account background and look at where you are contextually (have you done really well considering the circumstances).

I applied to St John's and my achieved are A*A* in Maths(we do it in y12 and fm in y13) and Russian and A*A*A predicted in Further Math, Physics and Econ (I'm in a state school). In my maths reference we have written that I have outperformed both y12 and y13(who were retaking or doing regular maths) in maths A level and got a school record. I'm just worried if Oxford cares because I had less time than others to prepare, but if I end up doing okayish regardless.

I mean 5 a levels and 4 A*s is good enough for anywhere the *only* thing i would say is some unis/colleges might not like you taking an A level like maths a year early (not entirely sure why but thats what my school told me) also take into account they do allocate a random second college which would interview you as well (if your offered an interview) so its not the end of the world if your chosen college is a bit more academically selective, but from what i know st johns doesnt seem to be at that end of the spectrum (i might not be correct so if someone else can confirm if possible).(dont worry about the early a level too much thought because if you do well in MAT theres no reason they wont interview you or give an offer its just some places prefer you dont)

No, every tutor will take into account the personal consequences of a war. It would be inhuman not to.

sorry my wording may have been a bit strong before. Its not that they dont care, its that some colleges may take it into account less than others (from what ive seen/heard, again may not be entirely true).Of course it will make an impact on every tutor, but id say how much of an impact will vary a little
