which welsh university is best for nursing?

Hello, I'm currently applying for university for adult nursing and i would like to go to a welsh university due to the bursary and i live in wales anyway so the commitment to work in wales for 2 years after is perfect for me. However, I cannot decide which university to apply for. These are the only welsh univeristies offering adult nursing:

Wrexham University
Cardiff University
Bangor University
Swansea University
Aberystwyth University
University of South Wales

If any nurses who have studied at any of these universities or student nurses studying here could tell me how they found/are finding the course would be very beneficial. Do you have to complete assignments whilst on placement? Did you feel supported?

Thank you!!

Hiya!

Awesome to hear you're interested in studying at Cardiff! Its a brilliant university for nursing

I'm not a nursing student unfortunately, but I can help answer some of the questions you may have 🙂 During your placement, you'll have your clinical skills assessed by using Practice Assessment Document, but from my understanding, the coursework in the academic setting is quite separate from the placement.

In terms of support, you'll be allocated a personal tutor and a qualified nurse. But in general, you will have access to the Student Disability Service (if you have a disability), the Student Wellbeing Team, and the and the Academic Skills and Mentoring Team.

During practice placements, you will be supported by Practice Supervisors and a Practice Assessor who will facilitate your learning and prepare you for in-point clinical assessments. A dedicated Placement Support Team will also be available to you, alongside formal mechanisms and procedures, to support your learning and progress and address any issues or problems that may arise.

You can find all this info on the Adult Nursing course page here

Hope that helps,

Hi,

I'm currently a 2nd year childrens nurse at Wrexham University, through my experiences so far I have found the nursing courses have been amazing!

On the university side of things, you will find that you need to complete 2300 hours of both theory and placement hours respectfully. This flies by - especially on placements!

In terms of day-to-day responsibilities this will vary from each university and placement area alongside your year of practice. For example, last year I completed observations, documentation, attended with staff to A&E, and went to watch an operation in theatre. All of these have been amazing experiences and allowed for a professional relationship to be built with the patients and their families. It's amazing to be a part of a childs journey through their time in hospital or in the community.

Whilst there are emotional times I found that the universities and the local healthboards support teams have been amazing. Additionally, by having de-stresses such as arts and crafts as well as playing games I have been able to relax following stressful shifts, which hopefully you'll be able to do to!

In first year you will complete the majority of the modules with all areas of nursing as it's essential that everyone grasps the fundamentals of nursing! You generally complete your assignments seperately to when you're on placement as it means you can focus on each thing individually. 🙂

In terms of applying for the course this will vary depending on if you apply via UCAS or by the university itself, you will most likely recievce an offer for an interview before recieving your conditional offer. For interview tips please see this link below 🙂 https://wrexham.ac.uk/blog/posts/application-and-interview-tips-nursing/

Please see the following link for more information on applying and an in-sight into a day in the life as a adult nurse on theory here at Wrexham University 🙂

And in case you wish for a view on placement here's a blog in the day in the life of a childrens nurse on placement (Sorry it's childrens not adults!)

Additionally here is a link to a comparrison between the different areas of nursing! 🙂 https://wrexham.ac.uk/blog/posts/adult-nursing-childrens-nursing-and-mental-health-nursing-what-are-the-differences/

I hope this helps you and free to ask any more questions you may have, good luck out there!

Hey there,

We're glad you're considering Aberystwyth University! While I'm not a nursing student unfortunately, I can answer questions about the course.

The full-time Adult Nursing programme is structured as 50% theory and 50% practice placements, totaling an impressive 4,800 hours of learning throughout your time here. While this might sound daunting, we offer plenty of support to help you succeed.

From the moment you start, you'll have a personal tutor who will be there to guide and support you throughout your journey. During your practice placements, you'll be supported by a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisors, who are experienced registered practitioners that can address any concerns you may have. Additionally, each area has a designated link lecturer, and you can always reach out to your personal tutor if needed.

You'll experience a variety of practice placements in different settings, from hospitals to community and third-sector organizations. We have partnerships with Hywel Dda University Health Board, Powys Teaching Health Board, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and Swansea Bay University Health Board.

The university offers several ways to support your well-being. You can unwind through a variety of clubs and societies, whether you’re into crafts sessions, well-being walks, or other social activities. Our student support team and advisors are always there to lend a helping hand, whether for academic or personal guidance.

Hi Sianellah👋

It’s fantastic to hear you’re interested in studying adult nursing, and that you're staying in Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

At the University of South Wales, the successful competition of your course will allow you entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register as a nurse🧑*🏭

Through the course, you’ll have access to our clinical simulation centre to gain experience in simulated environments before undertaking supervised placements. You can view the first-rate facilities by attending a USW Open Day🏥

Supervised placements take place in our partner health boards, as well as in the community and independent sector. There will be practice opportunities across different healthcare settings such as in the community, hospitals, palliative care, nursing homes and GP surgeries🤗

We wish you all the very best for your journey into nursing, no matter where you choose to study📚️

-Leanne 😊
