Unavoidable withdrawal from Master's Course.

Hi,

During the Summer of 2016, I applied for and started a Master's Course in Music at the University of London - with the assistance of a Master's Loan - a course which proceeded smoothly, without interruption, until September 2017 when I was, unfortunately, involved in a serious (Road) Bike Accident which incurred very unpleasant Cranial, Spinal and shoulder injuries which significantly interrupted my ability to work and study for several months.

I was further compelled to withdraw from the course following collapse in provision due to Covid-19 - and termination of the course itself - in light of these unusual and unavoidable circumstances, can you please confirm it would be possible to apply for a second Master's Loan - copious medical evidence can be provided on request.

Please confirm.

Hi there, Yes, further funding can be considered for another Master's course with evidence provided to be considered as Compelling Personal Reason. You would apply via the paper application and provide evidence for further funding to be considered. Thanks, Angela

Hi Angela,

Thankyou for your response - three questions please :-

1.

I have medical notes going back 7 years (I am still having treatment following the above accident) - would you need to see the whole record or would a letter from my GP suffice ??

2.

Would any other documentation be necessary for the application ??

3.

I would like to apply for funding for an MPhil starting in January - would there be sufficient time for the application to be processed before 6th January ??

Please advise/confirm.

Hi there,

With any evidence we'd recommend including a letter from yourself (signed and dated) confirming what happened in your own words.

Applications normally take 6-8 weeks to be approved, so there's still time, though we'd recommend applying soon.

Justo to check, when you login is your previous application showing as 'withdrawn'?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi,

The previous application is not showing as 'withdrawn' - can you please indicate the best way to proceed.

Thankyou.

Hi there,

You would need to contact the previous university and get them to send us a Change of Circumstances Withdrawal. They will send this to us electronically. We would not be able to process your Compelling Personal Reasons or Application unless the previous application is withdrawn.

Thanks, Drew

Hi, Unfortunately, this possibility vanished some time ago -

(Briefly) it wasn't possible to do this as the course itself - and its full administrative apparatus- was shut down before the request to withdraw could be fully processed. As such, notification of the decision to withdraw would not have reached you as the course itself was fore-closed by the College before that could be processed.

At this stage, therefore, any attempt to communicate with Registry would only indicate the non-existence of the course - no other information will be available or forthcoming to you as there is no longer a course to withdraw from.

In the light of this collapse, the loss of College staff, their records and any course related administration, can you please confirm it would be possible to apply for a new Master's Loan (Please note, a letter from a previous member of (managerial) staff confirming the former request may be possible, if - and only if - that member of staff (who moved on several years ago) can now be found).

Please confirm.

Many Thanks.

Hi David,

If the application is showing as 'approved' and not 'suspended or withdrawn' due to the closure then you'd need to explain this on a cover letter when applying via post. If you have any evidence I'd advise sending this as well. An assessor would then review and determine this. But as we can't access accounts on this platform we wouldn't be able to confirm. When are you planning on doing a new course? Is it after the summer of next year? Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thankyou for your message.

I can provide the necessary evidence regarding the request to withdraw - however finding a former member of staff to corroborate this will be much more challenging as the course shut down some time ago.

As such, everyone on the course was 'withdrawn' (i.e. studentship rescinded) irrespective of when they started. (Please note - the College is also no longer acknowledging former students or even writing references for them).

Moving forwards, the new course (M.Phil) should start in September 2025 - will a new application at this stage allow sufficient time for that start date ??

Please confirm.

Hi there. The applications for September 2025 onward aren't available until summer 2025. typically June they come out.

For the evidence, we suggest supplying what you can and explaining the situation in a cover letter.

Thanks, Leah.

Hi,

I might be able to start an MPhil in April '25 - wondering if it is possible to apply earlier ??

Please confirm.

If you are looking to apply for a course that begins between now and July 2025, you'd apply now on a 24/25 application. Any courses from August the 1st 2025 onwards would be a 25/26 application and they'd be live around the end of spring/early summer next year. Thanks, Jason
