Advice please? Transferring from one university course to the other

Hey so I have been doing a LOT of thinking about things recently and I wanted to ask for some advice (I’ll try and not ramble😅)

So my situation pretty much is I’m a third year student nurse in university. Up until this point I was happy with what I was doing and confident i had made the right decision etc. However lately I’ve totally changed my mind on that, not going to go into full detail but it’s mainly been due to stress and worsening mental health/burn out.

I know what a lot of people might be thinking, and that would be just finish the course I’ve gotten this far…..and whilst I would totally understand, I’ve accepted that I really do just want to change what I am doing. I’ve made my mind up on that.

As of right now the university is aware I’m going on a leave of absence however my question is, if I were to start looking and eventually applying for courses at other colleges/universities (considering college due to the course I’m thinking of), can I still do this whilst under the “leave of absence” or would I have to technically drop out before I could apply elsewhere?

I have chosen not to officially drop out as of yet as I was still weighing up my options but I’ve been having a think lately because I really do want to go back to education and work towards a degree of some sort, one that I may hopefully enjoy more. I’m considering looking at business courses and diff colleges but nothings set in stone as of just yet.

If anyone is able to give me some info or has been in a similar situation please let me know! Thank you😊

Hiya there,

Thanks for reaching out.

Firstly, your decision is yours, and it is not our place on here to try to influence it. Its clear you've had a good hard think about what's right for you and made up your mind, and that's a really brave step.

I would say you need to check what the regulations are regarding applying for something different with someone at uni who knows the process, such as your personal tutor. If you decided to drop out one option would be to take a gap year to work, travel etc and reapply for a different course in the main cycle next year with the qualifications you have, if they match the requirements of your course. It would also be great for you to visit the unis/colleges you are interested in applying to so you can get a feel for them.

One thing I would say is that life isn't a race. You are young and have bags of time to work out what you want to do, and its totally normal to not get it quite right the first time. I had several friends at uni who were a few years older than I and had transferred from different courses. If you're interested in any unis in particular yet, why not tag them in here to see if they can offer some advice?

I really hope this helps or at least reassures you. All the best and please post any more questions to us 🙂

Hi,

I think you should talk to your course leader and university well-being team AND family. Dropping out at year 3 is a big decision and shouldn't be taken lightly. Yes your mental health comes first however try to seek help FIRST. Then when all else fails who can blame you for seeking other opportunities.
Best regards

Have you considered the impact of dropping out on student finance? Having started third year, you will have three years of previous study. So, unless you choose an exception course, the calculation for a new course is:

Length of new course + 1 (gift year) - previous study

For example, for another three-year course: 3 +1 - 3 = 1 year of funding entitlement. So you would need to pay the fees for the first two years of a new course.

Sorry late reply I’ve genuinely just seen this. I get what you’re saying for sure but I genuinely believe this is a decision I’ve been thinking of for ages but I’ve just been too scared to admit it until I wasn’t anymore. I have spoken to my university pt and my family and they all advised the absence of leave for the time being just to allow me to figure things out. However I did ask my pt about some things I needed to know if I did decide to drop out. I think what helps is I’m a CSW at my local hospital and still going ahead with doing that so I’m not leaving bedside completely

Sorry late reply. Well I’d spoken to my PT regarding payment etc as I’m with SAAS (Scotland) and due to my course it was a bursary I was on. He told me I wouldn’t have to pay back anything If I was to drop out.

As for any funding when I go to college I would need to look deeper into it when I actually go to apply. I’m not super worried about it as I’ve got a job anyways where I’m happy with what I’m earning.
