Hiya 👋🏻 Thank you for your questions regarding studying Occupational Therapy!! I am more than happy to share my experiences as an OT student studying at the University of Essex! 😉

Experience on the course 🤓
Overall, I enjoy my study journey at my uni. Our lecturers are all very experienced with different clinical backgrounds and supportive. Different courses are well spread into our 3 years of study. Our cohort size is relatively small (max 40 students) therefore, you will know everyone and be able to support each other during your study journey. A personal tutor is also assigned since year 1. The tutor is one of the OT lecturers and will be having regular meetings with you as well as providing different support to you (academic, mental health, social or more! ). So you never feel alone during your study journey, you are always supported by the team! 💗

Course content
You may find detailed information about the course by visiting our website. During year 1, I think it is more focused on theory so there are more classes. You will be having your first placement during the last term and before placement you will have your moving and handling sessions. The second year will start focusing on how to practice the skills and theory learnt from class in real OT world, therefore you will have 2 placements (one in the first term and one in the last term). Final year, there are fewer classes compared with first year and second year, and you will be mainly focused on your last placements (whole second term) and dissertation. As a student studying the course, I am confident to say our courses are well structured.

Placements 🌱
As OT students require 1000 hours of placement to get registered under HCPC, it is compulsory to complete them during your study. In our university, we have a placement team to manage your placement which means you don't need to find placements for yourself. Our placement hours are split into 4 main placements (4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 10 weeks). You will be able to explore different workplaces and areas that OTs are working with assigned educators. You are also always welcome to contact your personal tutor if you have any difficulties. I have a good mix of placement experiences including a 4 weeks placement in a hospital (medical ward), 6 weeks with the county council (autism and learning disabilities), 8 weeks with the mental health clinic, 10 weeks of role emerging placement (community garden and getting involved in the Hub project)

Please also find the entry requirements for the course here 😊! I hope all the information provided above is useful and you are more than welcome to use the live chat function to chat with one of our staff or students (myself)! Looking forward to having you join us!

All the best with your study
Claudia (BSc Occupational therapy student)🌿
