Contexual offers

How do contextual offers work ?

like how do i know if i am eligible for one?

Lets say I am eligible and I meet the entry requirements for the contexual offers but not the normal offer , should i still apply? Will i be at a disadvantage?

Look up the criteria for contextual offers at unis in which you're interested. Different unis have different criteria.

You only need to meet the contextual requirements and no, you won't be at a disadvantage.

In most cases unis get info to check your eligibility via your UCAS application. It's applied automatically if you receive an offer.

Unis either list their criteria on their own website, or have a checking tool. e.g. Manchester:

Yes, you should still apply. No, you will not be at a disadvantage.

Hi there :hello:

I'm now in my second year studying at the University of Sheffield where I received a contextual offer and lowered grade boundaries. You are absolutely not at a disadvantage and are able to fulfil your potential just as much as any student.

I received my contextual offer because I ticked two of the boxes - Polar 4 postcode and disrupted studies due to my disability. I had to fill out a disrupted studies form with my UCAS referee to prove it affected my education, and then my application was approved.

The eligibility criteria may differ depending on the university, and they may have different application processes. But if you are unsure whether you are eligible or not I would recommend applying for it and the university will let you know if you are.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions!

What do you mean apply for it? Do you mean apply for their course or the actual contextual offer. Ive heard some people say its a automatic process via UCAS whilst others say you can apply for it physically.

I know it depends on the uni and all but they don’t seem to be giving that much information. My postcode was ticked as a factor and that led to it stating that I may be eligible for one? .. which is confusing to me because i want to know if i truly am 100% eligible before applying to their course

Hi there, :wavey:

It depends on the factors that you have ticked. I had to complete a form to prove I had disrupted studies. I believe the University of Sheffield contacted me once I submitted my UCAS about being eligible for a contextual offer.

I'm not sure if you are able to know 100% that you are eligible before you apply, as once you apply through UCAS then the universities will have all of your info so then decide what offer to give you. As I said with the University of Sheffield they contacted me after my UCAS application to encourage me to apply for their access programme, as they needed more info from me. Here's a link with more information https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/study/policies/access-sheffield#applying

Hope this helps!
