Migrant worker application

Hello,
I applied for student finance under migrant worker route but unfortunately, student finance says their transferring my application to eu. This means that I won't be eligible for maintenance meanwhile I've been working for almost 3 years as a care worker, and my family are also working. Student finance requested for my employment letter, payslips, my mum's documents as well as my steps dad's but today they've suddenly changed their mind and decided to transfer my application to fee funding only. I'm really scared and don't know how I'm going to survive because my working hours are going to reduce drastically going forward because I'm schooling 4 to 5 days a week. I'm 23 and student finance says there's no evidence that my mum supports me and so can't consider offering me maintenance loan. Could anyone here please explain to things to me and if there something I should do, I'm getting nervous 😓

Hi KUULA1000,

Do you know why your application for Migrant Worker funding was rejected?

Thanks,
Calum

Thanks a lot for your time, the reason was that there's no evidence that my mum was supporting me financially but from the what I read from gov.uk website, it didn't mention this but only says I should be in continous employment whiles studying or work at least 10 hours a week. Also, student finance staff member gave me the guidelines on phone about how the application should be done. I did followed all she mentioned and don't know why there's a sudden change of mind.

Hi there. Just to clarify, are you applying as a Migrant Worker by working yourself during the Academic Year or are you applying as a Chid of a Migrant Worker under your mother? Thanks, David

I did apply myself but added my family income just to make my chances higher. And do I qualify as a migrant worker myself when I don't have European passport?

Hi there,

If they're saying your mum doesn't support you this usually means you're applying as a child of Migrant Worker. They would need to see evidence your mum supports you if you're over 21, ie. does she send you money by bank transfer, do you still live at home and she pays your bills etc. If you don't have proof of her supporting you this will be why you have been told to apply for EU funding for Tuition Fee Loan only.

Thanks,
Claire

Thanks a lot Claire, it is possible to apply as a migrant worker myself when I don't have eu passport? My brother was helping me financially during my access program. Can my mum start sending me funds as prove since my working hours have reduced significantly since I started university? How soon can she do this and any other alternative for please?

Hi KUULA1000,

No, you cannot apply as a Migrant Worker in your own right if you are not an EU national. You would need to show that your mum has been supporting you on an ongoing basis, she cannot just start supporting you now.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi KUULA1000,

Your mum will need to be genuinely supporting you, you cannot give fraudulent information in order to get an approved student finance application.

Thanks,
Calum

My point is I'm in full time education and can't work now so I'm her responsibility and she's worried about this so it's not fraud please. I'm in full time nursing education, will go for placement and lectures and can't work to pay my bills and upkeep

Hi KUULA1000,

You wouldn't be eligible for a maintenance loan if you cannot show us evidence that you are financially dependent on your mother and this has been ongoing for some time. You cannot decide for your mum to send money to you now to show on your bank statements solely for the purpose of being eligible for funding.

Thanks,
Calum
