Emmanuel Katto from Dubai : Universities That Allow Intercalation in Medical Degrees?

Hey everyone,

I’m Emmanuel Katto from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in the process of narrowing down my university choices for medical school and I’m particularly interested in whether certain universities allow students to intercalate their degree. I’ve been struggling to find clear data on which schools offer this option.

Specifically, I’m looking at St Andrews, East Anglia, and Glasgow. Does anyone have experience or know if these universities offer intercalation programs? Or, if you know of any other universities that are known for offering intercalation, I’d appreciate the insights!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Usually if intercalation is possible this is clearly explained on the individual medical school websites. Note some medical schools permit you to intercalate at other universities. Also some have the intercalated year "built in" to the course rather than as a more separate (and often option) component, e.g. Oxford. There's a lot of information about intercalation opportunities available here: https://www.intercalate.co.uk/

Bear in mind that Scottish medical schools are especially competitive, and even more so for international students, due to having quotas of Scottish students they take on top of the UK wide quotas on home fees vs international fees students that medical schools can take (which are government imposed). Also bear in mind St Andrews does not teach clinical medicine and the courses there is for the preclinical years only, and you would complete your clinical training and graduate from another medical school e.g. Manchester, Edinburgh or some other options.

Finally it's worth noting that I don't believe intercalated degrees give extra points in specialty application anymore (and haven't for foundation post placement for some time) if you were intending to practice medicine in the UK, so it would just be an additional year of fees studying the basic sciences which should not confer any direct advantage in a medical career in the UK outside of pursuing academia.

Medicine is a big change from the arts degree you planned on doing last year!

Hello @emmanuelkatto24

That is great that you have been looking at these universities. The University of East Anglia does offer intercalation programmes, for example the one for medicine can be found here: https://www.uea.ac.uk/about/norwich-medical-school/education/intercalated-medical-degrees
This explains in a bit more detail, and also gives you examples and stories of previous students who have studied for an intercalated medical degree.

Also, if you would like to check out more info about our medical school please check here: https://www.uea.ac.uk/about/norwich-medical-school

If you have any further questions please let me know 😊.
