Hey @qrawl!

It's great to hear you're considering both options. A lot of the time the debate between either doing an apprenticeship or attending university really depends on what subject/field you want to enter; some fields require a degree at an entry level, whilst others don't. No matter what you choose, you can definitely still have a good social life with either - it's just about making an active effort to do so. 🙂

Do you know what sort of specialisation your future business might have (e.g. retail, trade, technology, etc.)? Would you benefit from having a university degree?

i've just started a degree apprenticeship and yes the social life can be different to a uni social life (ie you're probably not gonna be going out every night). I would say that it depends what you're looking for. usually a lot of apprentices are school leavers 18/19 yea there is some people who do an apprenticeship later in life but generally even with the age difference it's easy to get along with people. there's still loads of social life with an apprenticeship, some companies also offer societies and clubs aswell. If you're moving away from home into a houseshare then you'll have that social aspect aswell. I know plenty of apprentices that still go out and while it may not be every night they still do the whole student clubbing experience. Plus if you get away breaks at uni you can still join the societies with that too. Doing an apprenticeship is different to uni, its generally more work because you've got the study/work balance and there may be less time for going out because you've got work in the morning but it's got loads of pros aswell like the work experience and you get paid, making connections and all that. It's up to you really, an apprenticeship isn't for everyone but also uni isn't for everyone either so weigh up your pros and cons and you can always apply to both uni and apprenticeships if you're not sure

Hi there,

Both are good options so it is good that you are thinking about both before making your decision.

I would have a look into degree apprenticeships and the different types as I know that there are a couple of ways that the can be done. One of my friends does a degree apprenticeship and the company that she works for pays for them to go to uni for most of the year and then they work over the summer. She really likes this as she gets to have the uni life during term times and then over the summer she works for them which pays for her to be at uni for the rest of the year.

However, I also know some where they don't live at uni at all and live at home instead and just go into uni one day a week, so it really depends on where and what you would do so I would have a look into the different options for this.

With having a degree apprenticeship, you will still have a social life, it might just be slightly different to some uni students as you will be working more often which means you might not be able to go out during the week as much, whereas at uni you won't necessarily have uni every day so you will likely have quite a bit more free time.

If you are sure that you won't need a uni degree when you are older, an apprenticeship sounds like a good idea. Maybe try and see if you can talk to anyone at your school/college about your options as they might be able to help you a bit more as they will know you better!

Have a look into different degree apprenticeships too as finding/not finding a good one may make up your mind.

I hope some of this helps 🙂

Hi

There are many benefits to both University and apprenticeships, and as a result of this I think it is good to consider both options.

To see the benefits of the University it is a good idea to visit open days so that you can get a feel of the University.

Apprenticeships - it could be a good idea to speak to people who are also studying through apprenticeships as they will be able to indicate the life of someone in the role.

I hope this helps,
