Need career advice ASAP

So I've narrowed down courses I could see myself doing

1) speech and language therapy

Reasons for

Mainly Interested in pediatric slp but open to other areas . Interested in psychology, biology, learning about linguistics atm. Can be creative not as repetitive as other jobs help to support individuals and improve their quality of life.

Reasons against
Don't feel like I have enough related work experience , I can't go into another field /won't be as easy. Not sure if it's a job for life. Very hard to shadow a speech therapist/gain experience, have tried with 2 local hospitals.

2) Psychology/psychology with economics

Reasons for

Really interested in social psychology, developmental, health psychology. Interested in learning more about behavioural economics as well as macro economics.
Like that I can change go into a business related sector . Can do work placement

Reasons against
Unsure if I would be able to get a job with a live able wage , mature student , not sure if a minor in economics would help me or not career wise. Would need to do work placements to stand a chance

My educational studies consists of art, business alevels and I have recently completed a access to he in health science.
I mainly enjoy business, art and psychology.

Dunno if this helps but
Past Dream jobs include owning my own fashion business .

My best topics in business were finance and accounting ( am open to revisting these subjects )
Passionate about art but not interested in making a career out of it.

Really want to have a Monday to Friday 8/9 to 5 job (37.5-40 hrs) , not super repetitive, something that relates to my interests , something which isn't going to take forever to study and qualify for and definitely pays enough so I don't need to worry about paying rent .

What have you asked hospitals for - work or shadowing experience and for how long? My DD found that hospitals will agree to a day of shadowing experience but rejected requests for longer periods of work experience. Keep pursuing this - hospitals know that it is necessary for uni applications. Your work experience can be in any public-facing role so that unis can see that you are confident in dealing with the general public. So bar/restaurant work, charity shop, retail, care home, special needs schools, etc.

Hi @Rose_99 ,

I hope you're doing well!

It is so nice to hear that one of your options is Speech and Language Therapy. I'm not qualified so can't give too much insight about the job itself but will do my best to offer any information I have.

In terms of work experience and shadowing, it is a notoriously difficult thing to get. Most uni applications do not require direct work experience as they understand how difficult this can be, but are happy to acknowledge anything which shows similar skills. This could be working or volunteering with children or adults, babysitting, work experience with groups with communication difficulties such as SEN schools or any general employment which involves customer service. Have you considered trying to find shadowing opportunities in settings besides hospitals? It might be a case of writing to schools or community settings to ask them if you are able to shadow for a few days? And if not, they may be able to put you in contact with other settings who could help you.

In terms of it not being a job for life, one of the great things about Speech and Language Therapy is that is has a much broader scope than many people know of. There are so many different settings you can be based in which means that if you are feeling static in the job, you can consider moving into a different area of the job. I love how varied the cases can be as this really requires you to use your creativity and means the job is never super repetitive.

I hope this has been helpful, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Hattie😊
