How is the diversity like at the Univeristy of Surrey(especially for black women)?

Hi,
I have applied and received an offer from University of Surrey and ever since going there for Open Day, I'm thinking of it being my firm option. However, I'm worried about the diversity there for black women. Can anyone give me their opinions and experiences of the diversity there?

Hi @EvergardenFruits,

Congratulations on your offer to study at the university! I’m glad you enjoyed your visit to our open day and are considering Surrey as your firm choice. What subject did you apply for?

It’s absolutely natural to feel worried about choosing an offer, especially if you’re unsure about fitting in or finding friends with similar backgrounds. Every university has its unique population, and you'll find a diverse range of students from various cultures, nationalities, interests, and ethnicities. This diversity ensures that you’ll always be able to connect with someone who shares your background.

At Surrey, we have over 15,500 students, with more than 30% coming from international backgrounds across 140 countries. We celebrate every student, regardless of background, as it enriches our inclusive and exciting environment. For example, we hold regular events during Black History Month to acknowledge the contributions of the Black community. You can find more information on our website and review the university’s annual reports.

Additionally, the Students' Union offers over 100 societies, catering to a wide array of interests, including cultural societies where you can meet people with similar backgrounds, such as African-Caribbean, Filipino, and Hispanic societies. It's important to note that anyone's welcome join any of them, regardless of background. You can view the list of societies here.

I hope that somewhat answers your question. We will be holding our offer holder days soon, so be sure to keep an eye out for your invitation. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out!

All the best,
Daniel
