Exam gone bad:(

Hi guys, just needed some advice on how to deal with anxiety and handling my emotions in this situation. I did an exam but there was a section that you had to talk about a calculation as in how to work it out I answered it really wrong :/ and didn’t calculate it properly. Being back home,I realised what I should have said. I’m so embarrassed and feel like I can’t face my lecturer as they must think I’m so dumb :/ what should I do.

Hey there,

I totally get why you’d feel anxious - exam stress can really take a toll, especially when you’re replaying parts of it after the fact. It’s natural to feel uneasy about a mistake, but remember, it’s just one part of one exam, and these moments don’t define you or your abilities!

At Salford, every student has a personal tutor, which is fantastic for these kinds of worries; they’re there to help with both academic challenges and any confidence knocks that come up. I’d recommend reaching out to your personal tutor or any similar service at your uni - they can be great for talking things through and finding ways to manage similar feelings in the future.

If you need more support or just someone to talk to, we also have a Wellbeing and Counselling Service here at Salford, which could be really helpful if academic anxiety is something you’re dealing with often. Most universities offer similar services, so it’s definitely worth reaching out - having someone to talk things through with can make a big difference in feeling more at ease.

Remember, lecturers see these kinds of situations all the time - they’re there to support your learning, and a small misstep in one question won’t change their view of you. You’ve got this, and there’s plenty of support around if you need it!

Best of luck!

Hi, thank you for this, I really needed to hear it. Since I’m a third year student to mess up on something so basic due to nerves is why I’m so angry. As you suggested I have spoken to my academic tutor she is the best, it’s just I feel as though I’ve let her down 😕. I’m the person who everyone expects to do everything right and to be perfect all the time and I guess that leads me to becoming so hard on myself and know this mistake I made makes me feels as though I’m stupid 😕

Hey!

Please try not to stress over this, we have all said stupid things in exams that you would never normally say without the pressure!

Your lecturer will have heard every answer before so please try not to stress out over this too much! If you are worried, maybe write your lecturer an email or have a chat before the class starts to ease your nerves!

I hope this helps,

Hey! You knew what you did wrong, and the exam pressure must have just gotten to you - which is totally normal. If you are worried I would just send an email to your professor just explaining you made a mistake, they will totally understand. Good luck!
