LNAT advice

Hi I am in year 12 and am an aspiring law student looking to go to the topic unis such as Cambridge .🤞I spoke with my career adviser and she did specify that LNAT is very important therefore I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on how to begin my preparation .I know it is very early but i am a big procrastinator and slow learner so if i familiarise myself from the beginning I think it will be more beneficial than me cramming .Also I got mid gcse results (98777776665) so i want my good LNAT result to compensate for that 😪😪😂😂

Your GCSEs are fine. It is far too early for you to be starting any type of LNAT preparation, even if you tend to procrastinate. The earliest time that you could begin would be around April time, but you could risk prioritising LNAT preparation over your mock exams, which are arguably more important as most schools tend to use those results to give you your predicted grades. There are plenty of free resources out there to glance over if you’re adamant on familiarising yourself with the exam format but quite honestly, the LNAT isn’t something that you can prepare for over too long a period of time. I wouldn’t recommend spending more than 2 months preparing for it - and that’s if you’re inconsistent with preparation. The summer would be the ideal window of time.

If you want to apply to Cambridge, you should not be applying solely because it’s a top university. The learning and teaching style at Cambridge is unique and intense. It’s not suited to everyone and the application process in itself can be daunting. You should also not view Cambridge as the end all be all, as the majority of applicants will get rejected. There are many factors that go into the decision making process, but you need to be okay with the likely rejection that you will face before deciding to apply.

The LNAT holds various weighting at different universities. Some, like Bristol, explicitly state how much weighting they give to the LNAT in the admissions process. Others choose not to disclose all, or the exact details. You’ll need to check each individual university’s policy, but there are only about 9 universities in the UK that use the LNAT in the admissions process anyway.

Well done on your GCSEs! You don't need to start preparing for your LNAT until June/July 2025 at earliest. The most important thing to focus on is getting excellent predicted grades, and predicted grades are arguably far more important than your LNAT score.

Second in your priority list should be exploring your subject to make sure it is definitely what you want to study for a minimum of 3 years. So enter essay competitions (run by unis like Cambridge/Oxford), watch some introductory lectures, go to some free taster classes, do some reading - find out what interests you. It may not necessarily be law, and that's completely fine; many people change their mind on what degree they want to do in Y12. If it is indeed law, you have a lot of things to discuss in the modified personal statement section on your UCAS form in Y13.

I think LNAT prep should only come after these two things. Best of luck for Y12.
