7/8 to a 9 in maths gcse

im a y11 taking gcses in summer 2025 and maths has always been my worst subject. i know im better at writing but even with sciences i just feel that the maths is so much more manageable. i got all 9s in my y10 mocks but i revised the most for maths and i got an 8, but with the amount of revision i did i was disappointed it wasn't a 9. i know it's just 1 grade but the difference between a 9 and an 8 for igcse edexcel maths is like 20% and it frustrates me to see so many people in my year easily get a 9 with minimal revision while my hours of ppqs and drfrostmaths only get me an 8. i signed up for mentoring with a y12 who does maths a level which should help me target more grade 9 questions, but does anyone who has been in the same position have any tips for extending my maths capabilities to the top level, like specific grade 9 websites or yt channels?

it's also annoying for me because i'm interested in chemistry a level but i would not take it w/out maths which means i probably wont be taking it next year. i feel like i would have so many more opportunities for uni applications with maths and i think it's too late for me to have a comeback where i end up taking maths next year and getting an a* in y13 maths and further maths or something like that, but i'd like to end y11 at least being proud that i brought myself up to the top grade in my least confident subject.

Try doing the grades 7-9 questions that are on corbett maths / maths genie. they're basically all the hardest questions on the paper

I think with the way you are going, you will get that 9! I know that feeling, when you revise so hard for a subject, but others do better without revising, thats how I felt about English, I'm definately more of a maths person.

Practice is key! If you've nailed all the lower grade topics, then practice grade 9 questions.

I do normal gcse's but I think the same thing applies here. Some of the grade 9 questions are actually A-level questions, and you won't have learnt how to do that question exactly but you have learnt the topcis in it. For example, they might put trigonomety, circle theroems, and ratios in the same question, its up to you to decipher how to answer the question.

My teacher said you have to apply your mathmatical knowledge into these questions, and you may not get all the marks. He also says to try and asnwer every question, get part marks wherever you can. His exmample was 'if you see a question that makes no sense, but you see a factorisable quadratic, factorise it! It may give you a mark, even if you didn't know how to finish the question.'
