I really need some help with A-Level Italian...

Hello thanks for taking the time to read this,
I am desperate to talk to someone with experience with taking Italian A-Level because i cannot find literally any resources online apart from the person website.

I am a completely home-schooled/self-study student, i left sixth form this time last year and i took a big gap year. i am only now starting to study again (at home) and i am trying to take the exam in 2025.

I am half italian and i am fluent but i dont have any formal italian education,

I study comp sci, maths and italian.

I have no clue on where to start studying,
I am especially confused on the paper 3 speaking. Can someone walk me through the examination? Like what's the procedure?
Listening, reading and translation i can do no problem. but what about literary texts and what do you need to do?

Literally any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance!

Have you looked at the Edexcel Italian specification? It's a bit tedious to look through, https://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A%20Level/Italian/2017/specification-and-sample-assessments/Specification_GCE_A_level_L3_in_Italian_August_2016_Draft.pdf but the speaking stuff is on page 18 and should help.

I am having the same issue as you here, doing it as my 4th A-Level and I've been living in Italy for most of my life and still don't know what to do for some of the things

Yeah i have read through it a few times and it gives a good look into the elements of the exam but i dont think its too helpful considering im learning it completely on my own.

ideally i think it would really help me if i had someone explicitly walk me through the exam step by step so i knew for sure what im doing.

If you wouldnt mind maybe doing that for me i would be immensely grateful but i understand if not. 😅

I think in any case It would be a good idea to hire a few sessions tutoring...

I go often to italy to visit family and i regularly talk with my mother. i have never formally learnt italian like reading and writing im incredibly slow and i make mistakes... nothing a bit of practice cant fix.

I think the lack of materials is due to the fact no one does it lol

What do you find difficult?

( I am not sure if i just replied with the same message, it seems to have disappeared)

Thanks for your reply though, i have looked through the spec a few times. It provides details towards the components but not really a step by step exam walkthrough - unless im interpretting it wrong.

ideally, if you have prior experience with the speaking component, it would be really helpful to me if you could walk me through the exam from the moment you step into the room, to finishing.

This would be unbelievably helpful to me and i would be immensely grateful! 😅

I haven't done Italian Edexcel A-Level, but I teach Edexcel German. It will be similar, but I think a session or two with an A-Level Italian tutor may help you. Do ensure they have taught Edexcel and ask for grades they have achieved with students - it is slightly different to other exam boards.

So, I self-studied Italian A Level in Year 12 last year and achieved an A*. There are some good resources on teachitalian.co.uk However I mostly made mind maps etc. In terms of the speaking exam, I can give you a walkthrough. When you arrive you will be given a choice of two topics (in English). For example, you might have to choose between something to do with Mussolini and something to do with Marriage or Divorce. After you choose your topic, you are given a sheet with the two stimuli on. They are both to do with the topic you selected. You choose one and get a short time to make some notes. After, you begin the discussion about the card. They will ask you which one you chose of A and B. Whoever is conducting the exam has two compulsory questions which they ask you (which are very close to the bullet points from your chosen card). You then discuss with them the wider theme- for example if your card was on Marriage/Divorce, you would discuss changes in attitudes towards various aspects of family life, amongst other topics from theme 1- and make sure you also ask the examiner questions (they won't give a detailed response but asking questions helps you get marks). Check for understanding too.. for example, Mi segui?, Capisci quello che voglio dire? etc. After this section they will state that its time to discuss your research project. You give a two-minute presentation briefly summarising ideally 2 of your sources, including your personal response to these sources (what they made you think/explore further). You will be stopped after 2 minutes has passed. Then, your examiner will ask you questions based on the 6-10 key findings you added to your RP3 form (you do get a copy of this form in the exam, it has your sources and your key findings). This discussion lasts about 5-7 minutes i think, but I can't really remember the exact timings. Make sure you are still checking for understanding and asking questions! After the the set time has passed, the examiner will say something like thank you, that is the end of the exam. The recording stops and then you'll feel a massive weight off of your shoulders! My examiner was actually also my physics teacher- he made some jokes with me at the end, and we had a short chat about some of the parts of my IRP that he found interesting. Hope this helps! Feel free to message if you have any questions about any part of the course- it's pretty tricky to self study given the lack of a textbook! What book and film or two books are you studying?

Hello, man, I REALLY appreciate you explaining that. It was exactly what I was looking to know thank you so much!

I am still deciding what film and book to study... Maybe you could tell me what you studied and I'd just do those. Im really into American mafia movies so these texts look pretty interesting like one is about gli anni di piombò so that's pretty good.

I definitely have some questions, specifically about the research. I'll send you a message sometime soon!

Hey! In the sources boxes, just write name of article (in Italian) and who wrote it. In the Key Findings, write the things you want to be asked about (but you must fill the Key Findings boxes in in English). For example, my IRP was “Perché la violenza di genere è un grande problema in Italia?” and here are my Key Findings from 2024 (I dug out my RP3 form to find my exact wording for you!) I used are:
1) Role of Social/Cultural Norms & the Patriarchy
2) Impacts of stereotypes and their contribution to increasing rates of violence
3) The Legal Framework and the “Red Code”
4)Problems with the current legal framework
5)Media Representation of the crimes & Public Perception
6)Impact of sexualisation of women in the media
7)Impact on Victims & Communities
8) Existing Support Services & Organisations- is there a lack of awareness?
9) Education & Prevention
Good luck!!! I hope this helps you think of how to structure your key findings on your RP3 form
lmk if u have any other questions and i’ll try to reply (although might take a while as i’m trying to revise for my other a levels i’m doing this year 🙂 )
